First day of the weekend. Let’s goooooooo!
- Rusty Raven ( @RustyRaven@aussie.zone ) 16•1 year ago
I have completed some draft Community Guidelines for the group. https://aussie.zone/post/53977
Hopefully they are ok - it feels a lot like writing an assigment and waiting for it to be marked :-)
- Llabyrinthine ( @Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone ) English6•1 year ago
Be excellent… ‘Nuff said. But seriously Raven, thanks for your work and of course to everyone else who got this kickstarted and rounded up the troops. It was heartwarming to see.
- the_procrastinata ( @the_procrastinata@aussie.zone ) 5•1 year ago
I think that all sounds very reasonable. My only quibble is that it should be affects and affecting Melbourne.
- Rusty Raven ( @RustyRaven@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
I will trust you on that and change it - that is one grammar thing I can never really get my head around, no matter how often it is explained!
- omoikiri ( @omoikiri@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Absolutely ignore this if it’s over-explained and you don’t care, but I thought it topical considering your username here, but do you know the RAVEN hack? I used to use it back when I taught ESL.
Remember: ‘affect’ verb. ‘Effect’ noun.
So when it’s the verb, the ‘action’ word of the sentence, it’s ‘affect’, like: ‘it really affected me’ And when it’s a noun in the sentence, it’s ‘effect’, like: ‘the after-effects were really bad’ or ‘the special effects in this movie are great’
So in your sentences: ‘things happening in and effecting Melbourne’ ‘Happening’ and ‘effecting’ are the verb forms here, so it should be ‘affecting’
‘…around things that effect Victoria’ Again, ‘effect’ is the verb here, so it should be ‘affect’ If it was something like ‘the effects of the flooding on rural Victoria’, then ‘effects’ is correct, because it’s a noun.
- the_procrastinata ( @the_procrastinata@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
It’s funny how some grammar rules just won’t stay in your brain! I remember it as being: You affect the effect. You affect something is the action, the effect is the result.
Clarifying the gif part are you saying no gif or to write a description before adding one? I don’t usually do gif unless it’s a pm to a friend, but just trying to understand that part when I read it, due to it can affect some people with its nature
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
I believe it’s no gif unless you absolutely have to. Gifs could take a long time to load and it could be rather visually stimulating.
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
I feel like (though I’m not Raven so I could be wrong) that it’s more so adding alt text to an image. It’s helpful for those who are blind/hard of seeing, or even those with shitty Internet to describe the image/gif. I don’t think there is a way to pause moving images here on lemmy/aussie.zone which is disappointing, but I feel like keep gifs to a minimum.
I would recommend just linking it with an alt text accompanied for those who might not want to view it but still want to understand what you’re conveying.
Yeah that’s one of my other thoughts as well, what you wrote. But yeah link to gif is better than outright gif and you can post photos now so wondering if a description with photo should also be added for the vision impaired
- Rusty Raven ( @RustyRaven@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Yes, exactly - @studchud did a good example in the pet thread https://aussie.zone/comment/152866
The animated gifs is a separate issue (I might reword that bit to make it clearer) and it is intended as a suggestion not a rule that has to be followed.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
yeah I guess we have this new rule because now we can make images and what not appear in the thread, whereas before it’s all links
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
I think you could show images on Reddit comments too. Like specifically gifs, but I think the mods of the sub have to enable it. I don’t think Melbourne had it, but I know a few subs I frequented enabled it. But even then not a lot of people used them.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
oh yeah I’ve seen it before. I think the subreddit has to pay for that?
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
I don’t think so? Though there was like a sort of… like, Discord has Nitro boosting, where you can boost a server and they’d get benefits (like more emojis, larger upload files, etc). I think some subs had that, a lot of the crypto ones or stock based subs had them, but I don’t think you had to pay to get the benefits of posting gifs as comments. But I could be wrong, because I never really did that, only upvoted them if they were funny/relevant.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
oh wow i didn’t know they made it site wide, and that was just about a year ago.
- useless_modern_god ( @useless_modern_god@lemmy.one ) 4•1 year ago
Looks pretty straightforward thank you.
There are excellent! Thanks for all your hard work
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
I’m pretty happy with everything here. I think that, my major concerns are just trolls and such. Since what I remember of the DT was a lot of really welcoming folks (even now here while I stopped being active in the DT it feels like this place is safe… a safe space as one would say), but when it came to posts on the subreddit at large there were just some horrible and mean people, especially when it came to threads about the current climate/the American culture war they’re trying to bring here.
Obviously, everyone has a right to their opinion, just as I do. But a lot of those would get ugly, luckily they’d be pretty downvoted quick. But other than that, it’s a pretty simple rule list that makes sense. And I’m sure you folks on the admin team will edit the rules with enough warning if something comes up!
- Waddlekins ( @Waddlekins@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Agreed. I remember the first time i was on the melbourne sub like 6 years ago and the users were evil, ive blocked them till this day. Only came back during lockdowns and found dt was a much more decent, totally diff kettle of fish
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 4•1 year ago
I mean most of the people in the sub were decent people. It’s just the trolls and such who feel embolden to say some choice words that concerned me, but they were downvoted pretty easily anyway.
- useless_modern_god ( @useless_modern_god@lemmy.one ) 3•1 year ago
It’s been suggested that the extra technological hurdles for accessing this site actually prevents that toxic culture and the people who promote it, from bothering to show up.
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
Yeah, that’s what I reckon too. Besides Lodion did mention that he was looking to (or already done it) add barriers to stop the trolls and dickheads.
- Dalek Thal ( @Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
Surprised by the lack of replies, but this looks fantastic! If I’m being honest, the additional wording makes it much clearer than the old sidebar. Thanks so much for your hard work getting everything set up!
According to BoM it’s supposedly sunny in the day then high chance of rain at night ~ Melbourne

A new thread and a weather update. I’m loving this.
Went for something different. Happy to hear it’s well liked :D
- CEOofmyhouse56 ( @CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone ) 4•1 year ago
I love it. Good job 👍

Thanks for starting the new thread.
Not a problem at all

Instead of doing anything constructive I have been reading about the Aboriginal stories about Raven (AKA Crow). Known as Waa to the Wurundjeri People. Waa was originally a white bird, who stole coals/fire from seven sisters who were keeping it to themselves. He either dropped some or ended up throwing it at other animals who were wanting to have some too, which is how fire came to be used by mankind. In the process Waa started a bushfire in which he was burned, which is how he became black.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 5•1 year ago
good waa
- PeelerSheila ( @PeelerSheila@aussie.zone ) 4•1 year ago
Waa is an awesome thing to name a raven. A name I can hear!
- Rusty Raven ( @RustyRaven@aussie.zone ) 5•1 year ago
I can hear it as well - but I think that’s because there is one in the backyard right now!
- Hongohones ( @RosaliePreistley@aussie.zone ) 1•1 year ago
There are several stories about crows I’ve heard from different nations. They usually count them among the cleverest and most mischievious of animals. I love thier stories.
- jezbeenz ( @jezbeenz@aussie.zone ) 14•1 year ago
Ahhh hello DT friends, a bit late to the party but I have lurked a little. Glad to see you all here in this friendly space :) (formerly jezb87)

I shat away a headache. Ask me anything.
- TinyBreak ( @TinyBreak@aussie.zone ) 13•1 year ago
This baby has gotta be shit out. 2 giant poops in under an hour. How can he fit so much poo in him?!
- the_procrastinata ( @the_procrastinata@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
I feel like my day would have improved if I hadn’t read this.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
I don’t mind. Life is pain.
- oztrin ( @oztrin@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
From what I hear, the poo capacity of babies defies the laws of physics.
- Seagoon ( @Seagoon@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
kind of like making polystyrene, it expands
They are like mini human tardises
- SweetButSpicy ( @SweetButSpicy@aussie.zone ) 13•1 year ago
Bad thing about this is not getting notifications of replies and so hard to maintain a convo in a timely fashion…
- Seagoon ( @Seagoon@aussie.zone ) 12•1 year ago
Had an interesting day, yesterday I watched a pretty cool YT of Danny Elfman, he’s old and weird and awesome and so talented. But watching him gave me the confidence to be older and weird too. I’m just miserable if I wear beige and be “comfy” and be my “age”. I like to have some style, I like to express myself, have fun, wear black even. So today I bought black and stylish stuff, including a cute jumper with embroidered stars and moons and a grey cashmere top . Felt good. :)
- Sir_ListerOfSmeg ( @Sir_ListerOfSmeg@aussie.zone ) 11•1 year ago
The lies I tell myself. Went to the sourdough bakery in Bayswater to avoid Dröm but they were sold out.
Braved the queues at Dröm promising myself I would only buy sourdough 😆
What I actually bought:
- Bavarian beignet
- Chocolate marmalade babka
- Marshmallow choc chip cookie
- Chocolate pecan cookie
- Honey butter kouign amann
- Sourdough
- the_procrastinata ( @the_procrastinata@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
Sounds like your soul knew what it wanted.

How were they?
- Sir_ListerOfSmeg ( @Sir_ListerOfSmeg@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Spreading it out but so far the cookies were amazing. The chocolate was kinda like a brownie. Would eat again
- bull⚡ ( @bull@aussie.zone ) 11•1 year ago
I’ve only just got here but Bright and the drive in is very pretty. Totally guessed the motel wifi password like a hardcore hacker because they didn’t give it to me and there’s nothing in the room about it.
Now that I’m settled it’s time to go for a look around. I friggin love alpine regions/mountains.
- Sir_ListerOfSmeg ( @Sir_ListerOfSmeg@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
Went for the first time last weekend and it was instant love. Had the most amazing pies when we went for a drive to Beechworth at Miss Amelie. Kinda have to go back now
- mellisdesigns ( @mellisdesigns@lemmy.one ) 11•1 year ago
Went to the zoo, it was bloody windy! I feel like most of the animals were like yeah nah! All of the reptiles and snakes were out and about though, which is pretty rare!
- PeelerSheila ( @PeelerSheila@aussie.zone ) 2•1 year ago
I love the zoo! Even just walking through the gardens feels like an escape.
- TuxOfStars ( @TuxOfStars@beehaw.org ) 11•1 year ago
I am excited to be putting clothes on the outdoor line today #thuglife
- goodviking ( @goodviking@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Gotta make sure they don’t fly away though with this wind we’re getting
- TuxOfStars ( @TuxOfStars@beehaw.org ) 2•1 year ago
I know right. I actually started to put them on the line then chickened out and nicked to the laundromat instead. I don’t want to have to go searching through all the neighbourhood
- useless_modern_god ( @useless_modern_god@lemmy.one ) 10•1 year ago
I forgot to ponch ⏰🥊
Far out. 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Suddenly Saturday Edition.
- Bacon ( @baconmash@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
⏰🧃🥊
- landsharkkidd ( @landsharkkidd@aussie.zone ) 3•1 year ago
Yep, slept from like 12:30am (or closer to 1am) till 10am. Though there were wakeups throughout the night… the cat again.
- Hongohones ( @RosaliePreistley@aussie.zone ) 10•1 year ago
Wow physical meet up between a couple of DT mates was nice. Got a message of support also from another DTer. You peeps know who you are. Thanks a lot. I’m resigning myself to believe that I cast that shit into the ether and let it out rather than bottling it up and can always tell my story in another way anyway. Incredible to meet someone irl with similar shit going on and not pause for breath for an hour. Food and hot bevs were excellent. St kilda is iconic. I’m definitely getting in the north vs south war by now. Great day for a skate. Hopefully I’ll not too wobbly.
- LowExperience2368 ( @LowExperience2368@aussie.zone ) 10•1 year ago
Good evening!
Very glad we have this thread.
I have to start work at 7 tomorrow so I shall enjoy another episode of Modern Family and then go to sleep.
Also, I broke my two week no crying streak and it was a nice release.
P.S. if r/melbourne doesn’t come back, should we start a new sub from the ground up?!
