I’m also going viral on mastodon. WTF is going on?! :D
Otome-chan ( @Otome-chan@kbin.social ) 114•2 years agoThe best troll would be to just openly allow actual direct link piracy on /r/piracy. if reddit bans /r/piracy, then it functionally re-privates the sub (the thing they wanted to avoid). And if they allow it, then it’s a bastion of actual piracy. win-win!
ilovetamako ( @ilovetamako@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 48•2 years agoI like the idea of trying to get as many DMCA requests against it as possible so that reddit has to deal with them
Otome-chan ( @Otome-chan@kbin.social ) 30•2 years agothey wanted it open lol
worfamerryman ( @worfamerryman@beehaw.org ) 21•2 years agoThat is a galaxy brain move.
Christian ( @christian@lemmy.ml ) 12•2 years agoNever been an /r/piracy user, but this is so obviously the correct response that I feel embarrassed I didn’t think of it as soon as I saw this drama being posted here.
tartar ( @tartarsauce@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 1•2 years agobut then they could simply put in their own mods. remove the original team and make the rules whatever they want while keeping it open
NekoRogue ( @NekoRogue@beehaw.org ) English51•2 years agoThe bootlicking on that post (in a PIRACY sub nonetheless) is wild. Lots of “you don’t understand, Reddit is a COMPANY! 😭” I’ve peeked in on Reddit a bit and I’ve been seeing those kinds of “won’t somebody think of the shaaaareholdersss and adminss” comments on a few posts related to the protest. Things like this insightful little nugget:
“Seems all the reddit hate is based solely on reddit doing something similar to twitter, and I’m supposed to be upset cause “Elon man bad”? Tons of APIs cost money to use… build your own platform that freely allows everyone to scrape all “your” content, lead by example please…”
I wonder how many of those are Reddit employees and bots? They can’t all be u/spez alts, can they?
Oh and this is fun too, did you know that we’re all LiTeRaLlY extremists over here?
" Lemmy is very far-left. They are literally extremists, I’ll not be part of that shit."
Guess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.
Edit: Still figuring out how the formatting works over here.
rm_dash_r_star ( @rm_dash_r_star@lemmy.one ) English16•2 years agoGuess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.
Haha, that worked for Fox News in the USA.
Lots of “you don’t understand, Reddit is a COMPANY!
That’s the problem, corporate interest. We’d all be better served by a community open source platform like the Fediverse, politics aside.
arthur ( @arthur@lemmy.zip ) English2•2 years agoAbout the politics, that’s worth reading from the developers:
On another topic, there are rumors circulating that we are fascists or supported genocide. These claims are completely false, and like most viral twitter threads, are coming from a single Mastodon user on a personal vendetta who didn’t provide any sources. Such slander doesn’t deserve any response and is best left ignored. If you want to know the truth then read the following pages (both from 2021):
As you can see we are not a faceless corporation that is accomodating to everyone. We are individuals with our own opinions. If you disagree with these, it is no problem! You can still freely use the Lemmy software on different instances. If you host your own instance, we have no control over it at all and are unable to censor what users say. For more details read the documentation on censorship resistance. In practice, the instance list already contains various instances whose content would be banned from lemmy.ml immediately.

Would be fabulous if the only users left on reddit were the alt-right nutters.
Rentlar ( @Rentlar@beehaw.org ) English9•2 years agoReddit becoming voat is not on my bingo card but stranger things have happened this year…
SETECT Astronomy ( @DigitalPhreaker@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English8•2 years agoReddit would be thrilled by that, especially Spez; he’ll need some willing slaves for his post-apocalyptic dreams to come true, and goddamn if those rightoids wouldn’t be thrilled to lick his boots and make his meals.
Jeremy [Iowa] ( @jeremy_sylvis@midwest.social ) English2•2 years agoIt’s already going down that road. Many of the subreddits have already become either a strongly neoliberal (r/news, r/politics, r/whitepeopletwitter) or strongly neoconservative (r/libertarian, r/guns) echo chamber courtesy of dogpiling, astroturfing, and mod replacements.
- 😈MedicPig🐷BabySaver😈 ( @MedicPigBabySaver@beehaw.org ) English1•2 years ago
I’m guilty of strongly liberal posts/comments.
Hail sanity!
Not neo-nazis. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
TeoTwawki ( @TeoTwawki@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English13•2 years agoAcross reddit a lot of astroturfing is going on - its not all real users. Lots of sheep out there, only takes a few shills to steer them in the desired direction by creating the appearance of a majority.
Its the same culture that causes people to type out a post, but then delete it for fear of the reaction for sharing an opinion. Thats something that doesn’t seem to happen with Lemmy and I hope the mass of reddit users migrating doesn’t bring that with them.
NekoRogue ( @NekoRogue@beehaw.org ) English7•2 years agoI agree with all of this. I definitely think at least some of them are astroturfing. The mods from r/adviceanimals got kicked and ever since then, they mostly post memes that say things like “the official app isn’t so bad, you guys!” We all know u/spez isn’t above editing comments for petty reasons and since he got caught, I’m sure he’s more careful about not getting caught editing things to suit him now. I wonder if the voting system is rigged, too, at least in some subs.
Lorez ( @Lorez@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English2•2 years agoIf u don’t fight for my right to scrool and upvoot reddits on my iPhone with Apollo, ur a far-right boot-licking troll bot
NekoRogue ( @NekoRogue@beehaw.org ) English19•2 years agoI see that the trolls I was talking about are managing to find their way to Lemmy. They never have any actual insightful things to say, it’s just reducing your arguments to the most simplified version and repeating them back in a childish condescending way. It’s almost like…that’s not all the protest is about? Not sure if these are just kids trying to be edgy, or if they’re working for Reddit, or if they’re just u/spez being petty. I try to be an empathetic person, but I have a really hard time understanding thinking it’s fun to belittle people for caring about things. It’s such a waste of energy. If you need attention, learn a skill and impress people with it, I assure you it’s a much more fulfilling way to get people to notice you. I hope these people can get the emotional support they need someday.
lawrxnce ( @lawrxnce@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English48•2 years agoYep, I found a new home here because of your post, so thank you

Kresten ( @kresten@feddit.dk ) English2•2 years agoI asked as well. The post isn’t false. It just employs trolling behavior
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) English21•2 years agoI should probably check out mastodon too finally since I’ve made the plunge into lemmy already.
Rairii ( @Rairii@haqueers.com ) 17•2 years ago@DarkTides @db0 i mean, i’m commenting on this thread from mastodon so…
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 15•2 years agoWhat! Mastodon can access lemmy too?
m-p-3 ( @m-p-3@kbin.social ) 16•2 years agoThe Lemmy structure isn’t really visible from Mastodon, and communities shows up as groups in Mastodon, but yeah you can see Lemmy’s content on the Fediverse, same as on kbin :)
vijfhoek ( @vijfhoek@kbin.sh ) 14•2 years agoIt’s the magic of the fediverse!
DoucheAsaurus ( @DoucheAsaurus@kbin.social ) 9•2 years agoYup, and I’m commenting from kbin. The verse gets bigger every day.
Entropywins ( @Entropywins@kbin.social ) 8•2 years agoGet Federated
Rairii ( @Rairii@haqueers.com ) 7•2 years ago@DarkTides yeah! they both work with activitypub!
I don’t follow any groups/magazines/whatever directly from mastodon (because they’d clog my feed).
However, you can copy the post or comment links, paste them into the search bar in mastodon, and then boost/favourite/reply :)
It’s a little bit awkward, but you get used to it.
Favourite in mastodon turns into an upvote on the lemmy/kbin side. Boost doesn’t really do much on lemmy/kbin (yet) but does increase reach on the mastodon side as it always does.
And replies, naturally, show up as you’d expect :)
It will be really cool when we start getting browser plug-ins improving interaction between such services
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 5•2 years agoI need to learn more about this stuff. Didn’t know it was so connected.
Rairii ( @Rairii@haqueers.com ) 6•2 years ago@DarkTides that’s one of the great things about using an open protocol
sure the UX is basically non-existent, but it works!
hopefully a better client will happen eventually to make it easier for people to understand.
Awwab ( @Awwab@kbin.social ) 2•2 years agoIs it possible for someone to build a mastodon client that can also display and follow Lemmy/kbin groups so that they display correctly? I would love to switch over to my defcon.social account and do everything from that profile.
NoIWontPickaName ( @NoIWontPickaName@kbin.social ) 7•2 years agoI’m reading on kbin
InLikeClint ( @InLikeClint@kbin.social ) 2•2 years agoAlso on kbin
DarkenLM ( @DarkenLM@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoFellow kbinaut here.
cjerrington ( @cjerrington@kbin.social ) 6•2 years agoI like how kbin in a way combines the thread feel of posts and the microblogging timeline of mastodon into one thing.
You can follow users from each platform as well and follow their posts as well.
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 2•2 years agoAre there any Android apps you recommend for kbin? Kbin and mastodon seem like the apps available for it are more developed than the lemmy ones. Would like a way to keep track of communities on the phone. Right now I’m stuck to using browser, since didn’t like the apps for lemmy too much yet.
cjerrington ( @cjerrington@kbin.social ) 7•2 years agoKbin is actually less than 6 months old on the public side and I’m sure mobile apps are on the forecast. I know there is an app in the works already too. Even lemmy is a little young in public use so any mobile apps are not as polished.
The apps being built are by others offering their time for the greater use of the fediverse.
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 5•2 years agoSo this is a pretty exciting time then to get to still experience the progress of all this at its infancy.
cjerrington ( @cjerrington@kbin.social ) 7•2 years agoAbsolutely! There’s a lot of community members and new ideas of things that should happen and. It as well. The federation between instances is what makes it new as well and there’s a lot of opinions as well.
Greenblooded ( @Greenblooded@lemmy.pt ) 4•2 years agoI don’t think there’s an app for it, but you can install it as a web app. And it works pretty well.
rm_dash_r_star ( @rm_dash_r_star@lemmy.one ) English13•2 years agoI’m new to the fediverse as well. I checked out a few other ones, Kbin, Mastadon, etc. I definitely like Lemmy the best. It’s the most “Reddit like.” Say what you may about Reddit, but it has some nice features.
ninetynine ( @ninetynine@lemmy.film ) English16•2 years agoIf Reddit hadn’t decided to make it impossible for third party apps to use the API then we’d all still be there. I honestly really miss it. I just cannot support a company that doesn’t value people who have supported it (users, mods and developers).
dbemol ( @dbemol@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English11•2 years agoSame here, I’ve learned a lot thanks to reddit and that’s why I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the back.
Whenever I google something and need to access a Reddit link, I do it using Google’s cache to minimize damages.
rm_dash_r_star ( @rm_dash_r_star@lemmy.one ) English7•2 years agoThough honestly the more I see about Reddit, the more glad I am to get away from them. I usually don’t care much about politics especially when it comes to entertainment and media, but I just watched a video that was rather shocking about the antics that go on there.
Lilkev🌛 ( @Lilkev@tech.lgbt ) 9•2 years agoHello from Mastodon :)
NeatoBurrito ( @NeatoBurrito@kbin.social ) 9•2 years agoMastodon is pretty good to be honest. And I hated Twitter.
DarkTides ( @DarkTides@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 3•2 years agoDo you have an Android Mastodon app you recommend? I see a bunch looking through F-droid.
DH Clapp ( @dhc02@beehaw.org ) 7•2 years agoI’ve been pretty happy with Tusky
kemtue ( @kemtue@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 2•2 years agoI hope Tusky is not run by Elon Tusk ;D
helpimnotdrowning ( @helpimnotdrowning@lemmy.sdf.org ) 2•2 years agoBig fan of Yuito (fork of Tusky) on the IzzyOnDroid F-Droid repo and Play Store
jayrhacker ( @jayrhacker@kbin.social ) 5•2 years agoSo, one of the cool things about the fediverse is that you can follow mastodon accounts from Lemmy or kbin or any other federated site and vice versa. Pick the service that has the UI you want (Mastadon is Twitter like, kbin and Lemmy are Reddit like) and keep an eye on everything!
ElectronSoup ( @ElectronSoup@kbin.social ) 5•2 years agoThen pixelfed and complete the holy trinity :D
Hiccup ( @Hiccup@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English18•2 years agoIs the instance giving anyone else timeouts and just sluggish?
Also, is there a group for kali linux and such on lemmy already? I need to start adding back all my groups again. Also curious about NSFW stuff on lemmy.
Yes it is sluggish. I’m trying to figure this out
https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/47778
Did a tweak. I think it helped a bit. What do you think?
Briongloid ( @briongloid@aussie.zone ) English8•2 years agoPeople need to find a local instance and subscribe here from there.
CmdrShepard ( @CmdrShepard@lemmy.one ) English7•2 years agoSearch for the Lemmy Community Browser to find other communities and subscribe to them via whatever instance you signed up with.
rm_dash_r_star ( @rm_dash_r_star@lemmy.one ) English5•2 years agoLooks like this one is in Germany (lemmy.dbzer0.com). I’m in the USA and I was getting big lags and sluggish response. I found one in my region and it’s very snappy (lemmy.one). When you find a close instance, you can search for non-local communities and subscribe to them that way, just select the “all” button next to the communities search box.
gh0stcassette ( @gh0stcassette@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English3•2 years agoMost of the nsfw is on lemmynsfw.com, there’s some on kbin and lemmy.world too, but only like 3-5 communities each

blindsight ( @blindsight@beehaw.org ) English10•2 years agohttps://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35555
This is my first time linking to Lemmy from Lemmy. Hopefully, that works.
Edit: Cool. old.reddit link syntax works, too.
TL;DR: They demodded OP, the founder (I think?), of /r/piracy to force them to reopen. This shows that Reddit thinks it’s very important for users to have access to piracy information and a place to discuss piracy on the platform.
This is tacit support for posting piracy on Reddit, and, really, the only reason not to post direct links to pirated content is now gone since the threat of taking the sub private is what “we” want anyway. I suppose you could also get your account banned from Reddit, too.
I’m not a lawyer, but I wonder about legal challenges this opens Reddit to. It would be amazing if Disney now sued Reddit for encouraging piracy of their content. You can definitely trust Disney to be lawsuit happy assholes, right? I’d get a lot of shadenfreud from that.
Ozzy ( @Ozzy@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English9•2 years agoBased db0
rm_dash_r_star ( @rm_dash_r_star@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) English8•2 years agoI actually didn’t understand that post at first, had to take a minute to figure out Reddit had forced the sub open by giving you the axe. Reason being it didn’t cross my mind Reddit would go to lengths like that. That was a subtle and amusing way you put it.
