We’re in an exciting time for users who want to take back control from major platforms like Twitter and Facebook. However, this new environment comes with challenges and risks for user privacy, so we need to get it right and make sure networks like the Fediverse and Bluesky are mindful of past...

Every instance owner should post a weekly canary clause to prevent gag orders from being as effective.

Just a weekly post that says, “in the last X days, we have not received any gag orders”

If the owner ever fails to post the canary clause, it’s assumed that there was a gag order.

Canaries are nowhere a proven mechanism and mostly focused on USA laws.

They are not perfect and foolproof but they are very effective when you consider how easy they are to implement

What prevents authorities from updating the canaries on their own?

So was kommt mir nichts ins Haus.

One nice thing about the fediverse is that you can do forum shopping for the location of your server. I’d advice against the US.
