CatsGoMOW ( @CatsGoMOW@beehaw.org ) 14•11 months agoIf you’re found guilty of crimes, it doesn’t matter who you are or were.
Vaggumon ( @Vaggumon@midwest.social ) English10•11 months agoPresident, Congressperson, Senator, they all should be put in prison if a crime was committed, and if that crime is treason, they should get worse.
spaceghoti ( @spaceghoti@lemmy.one ) 8•11 months agoNo one should be above the law, no matter the office they hold nor the party they affiliate with. Republican or Democrat, President or Congressperson or judge, they should all go to jail just like anyone else who commits a crime.
Cableferret ( @Cableferret@lemmy.tf ) 8•11 months agoI think it sets a horrible precedent. We’ll never be able to get people into politics if we start holding them accountable for their crimes!
Jordan Lund ( @jordanlund@lemmy.one ) English6•11 months agoIt doesn’t happen often enough.
Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Jr. were all criminals. Bush Sr. too, but less so.
If we had actually been prosecuting them for, say, the last 50 years, then idealogues like Trump wouldn’t try to fake anything.
dr_catman ( @dr_catman@beehaw.org ) 6•11 months agoThe United States, to the best of my knowledge, does not yet have an election for King. The president is not the sovereign and neither is any former president.
So… if there is enough evidence to convict a former president of a crime that carries a prison sentence, then off to prison they go. They’re just another private citizen and deserve no special treatment (even though we know they will receive it).
