Debian release code names are derived from the names of characters in the movie Toy Story. This post lists Debian releases accompanied by images of their corresponding Toy Story characters.

It took me a while to realise this because by the time I learned about Debian they were already well into the secondary characters.
My favorite part remains naming the unstable release “sid”.

The name Debian comes from the original creator, Ian Murdock, and his wife Debra.

Cool that someone put the pictures together. I knew they were named after Toy Story characters, but as someone who’s only watched the movie once or twice, I didn’t know all the minor characters, and never bothered to look them up.

How is this news? Why not just link to Wikipedia’s list of debian releases or something.
- walden ( @walden@sub.wetshaving.social ) 19•1 year ago
Does wikipedia have pictures of the characters?

This has been the case since Debian was launched, decades ago.

Yes, that’s what the article says.
