Idk why I have so many questions for Beehaw Support this week, but I have a more immediate issue i’m trying to figure out. Several posts that I created yesterday are no longer showing up anywhere in Beehaw, similar to what was described in this post.
Yesterday, I made one post in c/Gaming and one in c/Music, and neither are visible anywhere. I’ve tried checking from my profile page, and specifically from within those communities. I’ve also tried checking from my mobile app, Sync. Regardless of where I check, those posts seem to be missing. I’m also noticing on my profile page that it says i’ve made 19 posts overall, but only 10 posts are showing on my profile page. I am 100% certain that these posts actually went through, because both had comments from other users that I viewed and replied to. I’ve checked the modlog and didn’t see anything about my posts being removed, so I don’t think it’s about that, either.
Idk if this is a widespread issue or if it is specific to me, but if it’s widespread, this seems like a serious issue we would want to address. Beehaw is already starved for content, and posts going missing would be exacerbating that problem.
Has anyone else run into this issue?
It is ‘intentional’ by the Lemmy devs:
Languages: Select the languages that you speak to see only content in these languages. This is a new feature and many posts don’t specify a language yet, so be sure to select “Undetermined” to see them. You should should choose both “undetermined” and all the the languages you want to see.
I still believe the way in which Lemmy handles languages is not very user-friendly and confusing.
yeah it’s messy. The most difficult part is that they do not appear as checkboxes, at least on the beehaw desktop UI i’m looking at. It’s like “highlighted” or “not highlighted”, and it doesn’t even seem to respond to that super consistently. Idk how much that is within the control of you and the other admins, but I’m glad we’re at least writing this all out for future users!
We are, slowly, chipping away at improving the site with people contributing code revisions to the main Lemmy code repository and the UI Project.
thank you for all your hard work building and moderating this community!

You’re welcome.
Adding this for documentation: I think it might be related to language settings. i’m a chronic tweaker of settings, and i switched my language from English to Undetermined recently. Evidently this hit the filters in a weird way, and hid every post where i had specifically set the language to English. I thought it was supposed to work the other way around, sooooo…idk one mystery solved and another opened up?
Edit: to clarify - setting my language to English caused the missing posts to reappear for me, and it did NOT hide the posts where language was set to Undetermined. Setting my profile language to Undetermined hid all of the English posts, but the Undetermined language posts remained visible. Is this intended behavior? If so, the warning message you get when changing language on the profile screen is inaccurate. Idk if that’s something the admins have control over, but just putting it out there.

I think this is the way language settings are supposed to work. When I tried it, it wasn’t actually possible for me to un-select ‘Undetermined’ and for the change to go through. So we all have ‘undetermined’ pre-checked, but typically don’t won’t to see posts in every language available, so it only shows posts where a language wasn’t specified. From then, we choose the language(s) we understand and leave everything else unchecked. Since you had English unchecked (the same as anybody else who doesn’t understand it), your posts were hidden.
