Mageia is a Linux distribution forked from Mandriva.
owiseedoubleyou ( @owiseedoubleyou@lemmy.ml ) 5•10 months agoGreat to see good ol’ Mandrake still going.
ProdigalFrog ( @ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net ) English4•10 months agoAlways had a soft spot for Mageia, as I thought their Admin panel was an improvement compared to SUSE’s.
But unfortunately I think they are slowly dying. Their forum is a ghost town, and besides their Admin panel, there isn’t anything compelling about Mageia that would make me consider it over other options.
veer66 ( @veer66@lemmy.one ) English8•10 months agoBecause of the Redhat incident, I started to see people asking for community-based distros without a corporate that dominates the community. And, Mageia is one of them. So, I hope it will be more popular.
GenBlob ( @GenBlob@lemm.ee ) 3•10 months agoNice, I love Mageia. I recommend anyone still distrohopping to give it a shot.
TheCee ( @TheCee@programming.dev ) 2•10 months agoIs this to rpm-based distros what Mint is to deb-based distros?
LeFantome ( @LeFantome@programming.dev ) 2•10 months agoMore like what Ubuntu is ( relative to Debian ). They both started a long time ago and have gone their own way.
The Cuuuuube ( @Cube6392@beehaw.org ) English3•10 months agoEven then, I feel that gives the wrong idea. Debian is the community project to Canonical’s commercialized Ubuntu, meanwhile, Mageia has its roots in being a community project brought forth from a commercial product.
Animortis ( @Animortis@kbin.social ) 2•10 months agoI honestly think we need community-managed LTS distros. This is a good start.
ProdigalFrog ( @ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net ) English7•10 months agoDoesn’t Debian already effectively fill that niche? The 18 months of support that Mageia has isn’t very LTS compared to Debian’s 5 years.
Animortis ( @Animortis@kbin.social ) 6•10 months agoDebian supports their version for two years. Then you need to upgrade.
But I just think more options are always good. Only having one just limits us to a mono-culture if we don’t want to go with some corporate solution.

According to this, All Debian releases since Debian 6 have had LTS support, which extends support for a total of 5 years.
Animortis ( @Animortis@kbin.social ) 3•10 months agoI stand corrected!
