Belgium authorities are getting worried by a series of school arsons believed to be connected to newly mandatory school sessions in some parts of the country.

In a heartwarming example of interfaith solidarity, ultraconservative Catholics and ultraconservative Muslims have put their differences aside to join forces in burning down some schools for teaching about consent and the existence of LGBT people.

The article only mentions Islam

doesn’t change the fact that the church is notoriously unaccepting towards personal freedom to exist whenever their God created someone non-binary. 😶🌫️

Do Roman Catholics ever go as far as to burn down schools, though?

Would be nice if the article included any information about said sex ed program.

It is a normal sex ed program that exists since half a century as the article points out. Having to justifiy teaching children about sex, risk of stds and consent must not be justified against vile lies of extremists.

Oh well, let us just wonder as to what group might be responsible.
Several Islamic groups have also condemned the program in a joint statement, fearing it will favor “hypersexualization” of children.
Ah well.
Surprise!

Why do they use the word “also” in the quote you cherry picked? Who does the “also” refer to?
- Pringles ( @Pringles@lemm.ee ) English4•1 year ago
It refers to conservative catholic movements.
- Alien Nathan Edward ( @reverendsteveii@lemm.ee ) English1•1 year ago
I wonder why, when the article clearly shows that this is an interfaith movement toward intolerance and violence, the comment OP chose only to highlight Islamic involvement
- Murvel ( @Murvel@lemm.ee ) English1•1 year ago
I don’t fucking know, ask AP, they published the article.

We both already know the answer. It’s the people whose bigotry you chose to ignore when you were singing out muslims for being bigots.
- Murvel ( @Murvel@lemm.ee ) English1•1 year ago
No, we don’t both know the answer. That’s just you making assumptions, I’m guessing, based on your political views. I’m not ignoring anything I quoted the article, simple as.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Friday that he will seek the help of government experts on extremism in the wake of a series of school arsons.
De Croo spoke just hours after a sixth school in the French-speaking Wallonia region was torched this week.
The program is a required four hours of training for students aged 11 to 12 and 15 to 16, intended to help them develop their relational and sexual lives.
De Croo said that sexual education has been provided in Belgium for half a century and warned that the country will not take steps backwards.
“I would like to call on everyone to calm down and try once again to cut through the lies circulating about the Evras system,” the education minister in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Caroline Desir, said Friday.
Local media quoting the prosecutor’s office in the city of Charleroi said the investigation has not established a link between the six arsons so far.
