CookieJarObserver ( @CookieJarObserver@feddit.de ) 9•2 years agoBruh nobody wanted foldable smartphones, they are shit.
OneDimensionPrinter ( @OneDimensionPrinter@lemm.ee ) 5•2 years agoOh man I love mine so much
CookieJarObserver ( @CookieJarObserver@feddit.de ) 0•2 years agoOk, come back in a month and tell me if its still working :)
OneDimensionPrinter ( @OneDimensionPrinter@lemm.ee ) 5•2 years ago8 months in and it’s great :) we will see how it fares longer term, but aside from Discord being wonky when moving between resolutions, it’s largely been great. I was nervous about screen issues originally, but maybe I’m just lucky.
lemillionsocks ( @lemillionsocks@beehaw.org ) 5•2 years agoI’ll never get this reaction to foldables. Personally Im not in the market for them especially in their current state where they are super expensive, fragile, and for me dont offer much in the way of practical use.
That said it will be exciting to how this market improves. As eventually costs come down and reliability goes up you can eventually easily get something that is more portable than a modern slate form factor which can also unfold to allow for better media consumption.
For the ridiculous price theyre asking for experimental tech I get the pushback, but it it doesnt take a lot of creativity to see how technology that allows for a bigger screen in smaller form factor can be useful.
Fell ( @fell@ma.fellr.net ) 3•2 years ago@CookieJarObserver @Sileem I just want two things, that already rules out the majority of phones in the market:
- Rectangular screen with 16:9 aspect ratio
- Headphone jack
Nicodemus_Weal ( @Nicodemus_Weal@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 years agoWhy the 16:9 aspect ratio? Do you watch a lot of videos on your phone?
I’m rocking a Pixel 5a for the headphone jack. Was one of the only “newer” phones that had one. Zero idea what I am going to do when it eventually dies on me. Doesn’t seem like anyone is including headphone jacks anymore.
Fell ( @fell@ma.fellr.net ) 2•2 years ago@Nicodemus_Weal I watch a lot of videos and I play a lot of older/ported games, both are best enjoyed in 16:9.
esperkin39 ( @esperkin39@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years agoAbsolutely love mine, but I don’t touch Google hardware.
CookieJarObserver ( @CookieJarObserver@feddit.de ) 2•2 years agoThe pixel phones are actually good, best android you can get, especially Software wise (its surprisingly easy to de-Google it)
esperkin39 ( @esperkin39@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years agoIn my experience, no. The software is blank (which some prefer, so more power to you!) and the hardware is weak and unreliable.
An $1800 phone shouldn’t fail in a few days, but no one here has expressed any surprise at this “news.” Why not? Because it’s a google phone.
mbryson ( @mbryson@lemmy.ca ) 1•2 years agoThe idea behind the tech can be useful in niche situations, but for the general user - until it is nearly indestructible - it’s something most people are looking to avoid. After all, you drop an exorbitant price on something with a specific stress area that can cause damage which you can either repair for another exorbitant fee or just be forced to outright replace the device entirely.
Most people are fine with just a glass rectangle in their pocket.
CookieJarObserver ( @CookieJarObserver@feddit.de ) 1•2 years agoI see them as a in between tablets and smartphones, but tablets are already the uncanny in between Laptops and Smartphones…
I want a phone that works and i want a pc that works, but the fold devices are (in my opinion) the bad parts of both
caffinz ( @caffinz@lemmy.ml ) 8•2 years agoI think the biggest issue with Google hardware is that there is always at least one huge flaw. My pixel watch for example has terrible battery life. My 7 Pro display got a green tint and died while I was using it to navigate, after two months. I RMA’d it, but the display I got back had a disabled fingerprint reader.
It’s always a gamble with Google hardware sadly. :(
Captain Jimmy T Kirk ( @Captain_Jimmy_T_Kirk@lemmy.ml ) 2•2 years agoYeah, I don’t trust Google hardware enough to spend 2k on something.
thebuoyancyofcitrus ( @thebuoyancyofcitrus@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years agoPixel 7a here. My battery life is far worse than my 4a 5G. So much buyer’s remorse.
But if I’m being honest, I’d drop silly money for an android phone that is small enough to actually fit in my hand and pockets comfortably.
ChessGuy ( @ChessGuy@lemmy.ml ) 7•2 years agoIt’ll take a long time I reckon for the general public to start wanting to buy a foldable. I think it’s still far away due to the risks, worries and the high cost of owning one
stown ( @stown@sedd.it ) 3•2 years agoThat’s a damned shame. My wife has the Galaxy flip and absolutely loves it. I was just telling her last night that I think I’m going to get the Pixel Fold. I really like the size of it when it’s folded, not a fan of the giant screens on non-foldables.
frozen ( @frozen@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz ) 2•2 years agoWell, mine comes in tomorrow, so we’ll see how bad it is. Hopefully I can keep it alive longer than 4 days…
BurningnnTree ( @BurningnnTree@lemmy.one ) 1•2 years agoWhy doesn’t the plastic screen protector cover the entire screen? It seems so unnecessary to leave a gap.
