I’m considering removing the front fence (which is a criss cross pattern made of wood) at the front of my house (its literally only 1m high, there is no gate, and you can walk around it using the driveway. This would allow me to create a path from my doorway, directly to the footpath, and replace the grass with Trees native shrubs and flowers. I’d then grow a small hedge where the fence was.

Just wondering whether the fence adds any real value to the property, if I replace it with a hedge anyway?

  • I don’t think the presence or absence of a fence makes a big difference, as long as the overall design works. Growing a hedge is another matter, the value to the property is a question that should be fairly low on your list of priorities in that decision… A hedge creates ongoing work, and depending on the variety may need other work to keep it looking good. A poorly maintained hedge is an eyesore that won’t do much for your property values. Whether or not a well maintained hedge it is an asset or a liability to the property would depend on the future buyers - some people love them and would be happy to take over the maintenance, others would see it as unwanted future maintenance and a cost burden to maintain or remove.

      Thanks for the response. It might actually just be small shrubs (rather than a clean hedge). To be honest, not a real fan of manicured hedges, which is one reason I’m considering getting rid of the grass too, and replacing with bird / bee compatible stuff.
