Yeah it doesnt really conclude much. The study also states:
Indeed, their results showed that both drinking coffee and consuming caffeine reduced the connectivity of the default mode network. This suggests that whether it’s caffeine or a cup of coffee, either will do the trick.
Their study demonstrated that both caffeine and coffee can gear individuals up to transition from a state of rest to a state of task-oriented work.
So essentially if I gather correctly their conclusion isnt that caffeine doesnt work or isnt effective it’s that the additional morning ritual can also help you gear up for the day. I can believe that as well there is something about morning routine and ritual towards being ready for the day and the act of sitting down with a cup of hot stuff or sipping it while on the go is a part of that routine for many people.
But yeah this isnt conclusive and it isnt controversial that caffeine is a stimulant that is already known.
This doesn’t really surprise me. I’ve noticed for a long time that an energy drink or other caffeine source hits different than a cup of coffee.
When I used to work late at a nursing home, I’d sometimes have a cup of decaf for a pick-me-up (that’s all they had). Just the ritual and feeling that I was drinking coffee was enough to give me a small boost, even though logically it didn’t make sense.
ok, well, I like coffee still
I never felt like caffeine did much for me. I would down a 2liter of mountain dew while studying in the evening and then go right to sleep back in college.
Caffeine can actually make some people with ADHD sleepy. I’m not sure how well it’s been studied, but it’s quite a common reason for people to end up on the path to get a diagnosis for adult ADHD.

I drink a monster every morning and it barely does anything. Then again, I’m on drugs that make me sleepy.
You also drink a monster every morning. Tolerance to caffeine is a thing
@withersailor That’s fine by me!
