Organic means “grown without chemicals”.
It’s a statement against pollution and nothing else
KaleDaddy ( @KaleDaddy@beehaw.org ) 14•8 months agoBut what the hell is a “chemical” everything is a chemical
I used to work at whole foods and we had to do training on the meaning of the organic label. In a survey 94% of responders listed the reason they prefer organic was no pesticides. However organic produce is still sprayed with pesticides

Not in Europe. Organic is by definition grown without use of artificial and harmful products like pesticides and herbicides.

Nice goal post move attempt. They do use pesticides in Europe too though. You’re just wrong. Now you’re wrong twice, nice.
NotSpez ( @NotSpez@lemm.ee ) 3•8 months agoPesticides are used in Europe, sure. But to be able to market a product as organic there are actually pretty extensive regulations

Key word here, they use natural pesticides. But still pesticides none-the-less.
blindsight ( @blindsight@beehaw.org ) 3•8 months agoCopper sulfate is a natural pesticide. It’s allowed in organic farming.
It’s also more toxic than most artificial pesticides at its effective concentration. Make sure you rinse your organic produce thoroughly.
kleenbhole ( @kleenbhole@lemy.lol ) 1•8 months agoIt’s definitely other things too. It’s a perceived indicator of quality due to higher prices alone, which also make it a status symbol, and even a moral imperative and source of judgment. Probably associated with orthorexia.
it’s likely not possible for all produce to be grown organically and still maintain affordability and production numbers for consumer demand at the same price. Cheap chemical fertilizers are a significant reason why the population got so damn big.
