Was just thinking how nice it is to be on social media and not be bombarded with ads!

Its amazing how this is the first site in years that I dont need to install blockers or scroll through bs or be so cynical with what I read.

Fellow Australians, rejoice in this little space we have from corporate bombardment

      • It was a real pain to figure out how to get out of element picker/zapper mode*, but yes, it has the exact same functionality as desktop. Makes a lot of sites navigable when they otherwise wouldn’t be, and saves me so much frustration.

*You have to swipe right on the screen to exit the mode. If you have ublock origin, but don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re in for a treat!

Click on the the icon for the extension, and look for two symbols, a lightning bolt and a dropper (like for liquids). Select the bolt, hold down shift (unless on mobile) and start clicking around wildly! Then refresh the page. If you want things to go away and stay away, use the dropper. I use these tools to get rid of annoying banners, the empty spaces some ads leave when blocked, auto-playing videos, and whatever else I want gone.

        • Once I added ublock origin the ads were hidden and not breaking the page layout on mobile anymore. Have not needed to do anything extra so far.

May not have used pages that leave the white space though, as I tend to visit the same few sites most of the time.

  • I totally understand the need for ads. It sucks but I understand why social media services have it. But I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with Reddit’s ads on mobile. I don’t know if you could personalise them, but I’d get so many weird ads. Like male pattern baldness or erectile dysfunction ads. I mean the gambling ads sucked but I guess I could understand why I was getting them. But the other ones are just… Weird.

And you couldn’t even say “not interested” or “doesn’t relate”. At least with TikTok ads I can tell them that yeah, I’m either not interested or they don’t relate to me.

  • I get no ads when visiting facebook on a desktop browser. I’m running ublock origin, I also used a tool (which FB promptly cease and desisted) which unfollowed everything I’d ever followed over the years. Then finally a while back I spent a night clicking ‘hide ad’ on every sponsored post which appeared in my feed.

The combination of those three things has made it FB doesn’t show me ads anymore. I just get posts from friends and groups I choose to follow. Kinda like it was in 2007.
