jarfil ( @jarfil@beehaw.org ) 15•8 months ago1 in 50 million chance… world population of 8 billion… average yearly birth rate of 19 per 1000… that would make it 3 per year of these cases! I wouldn’t’ve expected so many double-featured individuals being out there 😯
seang96 ( @seang96@spgrn.com ) 8•8 months agoArticle also said last time it happened was in 2019. Surprised there hasn’t been any for nearly 4 years.
jarfil ( @jarfil@beehaw.org ) 1•8 months agoYeah, it also says there is a 0.3% of females thought to have the condition. The numbers don’t seem to fit.
seang96 ( @seang96@spgrn.com ) 2•8 months agoAssuming 53% of population are females that is 12.7 million with the condition. Using your 19/1000 that’s 241k babies a year under this subgroup. Maybe it is 1 in 50 million chance for those 241k babies a year? Still seems off though I did pull the 53% out of my butt but I vaguely remember there being a slightly higher % of females in the total population.
lenguen ( @lenguen@beehaw.org ) 9•8 months agoBest of luck to her. Would they want to try performing a typical delivery or a C-section? I would think the latter but I’m no expert.
LostXOR ( @LostXOR@kbin.social ) 10•8 months agoFrom the article it seems like she wants to do a normal delivery, but a C-section might be necessary if there are complications.
XTornado ( @XTornado@lemmy.ml ) 1•7 months agoA normal delivery!!? She crazy… Like I understand on normal cases but this…
Drusas ( @Drusas@kbin.social ) 7•8 months agoThat sounds…risky. I wonder how far apart they were conceived.
HumbleHobo ( @HumbleHobo@beehaw.org ) English4•7 months agoI can’t be the only one who read that article and didn’t cringe a bit at the end. The woman thinks she is going to get through best care possible and she lives in Alabama, where they are currently shutting down maternity units: https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/in-alabama-three-maternity-units-will-stop-delivering-babies-heres-why-it-puts-women-at-risk/ar-AA1ifxW3
