dino ( @dino@discuss.tchncs.de ) English11•1 year agoMaybe windows rules will now work properly instead of being buggy and delete themselves…fingers crossed Imho KDE is too big, there are so many cogwheels they miss the opportunity to actually polish each and every aspect.
e.g. why does KDE need a specific videoplayer?
RaivoKulli ( @RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz ) 6•1 year agoKDE and GNOME want to be full suites of software that offer a coherent look and whatnot.

This release KDE has actually focused on improving and fixing more than just adding features
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 5•1 year agoMPV and VLC Flatpak both use Xwayland btw.
Clapper uses Wayland though.
dino ( @dino@discuss.tchncs.de ) English2•1 year agonever heard of clapper. Nothing is going to replace mpv for me.
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 3•1 year agoClapper is a GTK something GUI for MPV that doesnt look horrible ;D
Nailbar ( @nailbar@sopuli.xyz ) 3•1 year agoMaybe this time I can get blur behind semi transparent windows to work 🤔
Sina ( @Sina@beehaw.org ) 1•1 year agoI agree as well, but don’t get the video player part. It shouldn’t need a specific one.
pbjamm ( @pbjamm@beehaw.org ) English1•1 year agoDoes it NEED a specific player or just come with a default?
dino ( @dino@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•1 year agoI don’t understand the question?

I have not seen anything that indicates KDE requires a specific video player. So I was asking does it NEED a specific player or just have a default that it is installed with?
zagaberoo ( @zagaberoo@beehaw.org ) 2•1 year ago‘Need’ as in why do they need to stretch their development resources to cover a video player when they’re already stretched thin and perfectly serviceable alternatives exist.
I have no actual idea, but that’s what was meant. My guess is they want everything written in Qt6 so it can all be portable to windows etc.
dino ( @dino@discuss.tchncs.de ) English1•1 year agoit ships with one, if that answer your question.
I started using Plasma 5 a smidge before devs were saying it was ready for primetime. That was my conversion from Gnome (which I was very happy to leave by then) and it’s been nothing but positive.
I will wait for the full release of Plasma 6, but I’m super excited for it. I still <3 Plasma 5.
Thank you KDE devs!
const_void ( @const_void@lemmy.ml ) 3•1 year agoWhat Plasma 6 feature are you most excited for?
Nothing specific. When I first jumped from gnome I spent probably more than a year going “damn that was thoughtful” or “wow, that’s super convenient” as I discovered different features. As I said, I was an earlyish adopter of Plasma 5, and it was enjoyable just to watch it take shape.
I like what the KDE team does, and I like seeing Plasma continue to get better, so I’m just looking forward to a fresh new release, and discovering all the little niceties.
And bringing back the compiz style cube is pretty nice too. 😁

TJmCAwesome ( @TJmCAwesome@feddit.nu ) 6•1 year agoWill this affect SteamOS in any way? I guess the development on that is separate from KDE but I don’t really know.
samc ( @samc@feddit.uk ) English22•1 year agoEventually valve will probably push a SteamOS update out with plasma 6. But it’ll be up to then when to do it.
TJmCAwesome ( @TJmCAwesome@feddit.nu ) 2•1 year agoMakes sense, that’s what I assumed
James Kirk ( @jameskirk@startrek.website ) 5•1 year agoTo a “newbie”, what does this mean? I transitioned to Linux full time less than a year ago and settled with KDE. Will this affect me in any way?
unique_hemp ( @unique_hemp@discuss.tchncs.de ) 9•1 year agoJust a bigger update, should be fine. AFAIK they did not do any major overhaul from a regular user’s perspective, but there are some pretty big changes under the hood. If you use a distro with regular releases, this will probably be included in the next one.
James Kirk ( @jameskirk@startrek.website ) 5•1 year agoYeah that’s what I thought, thanks for the answer!
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 3•1 year agoThere where some changes though, different Dolphin icons, different and way better Panel changing, and more
unique_hemp ( @unique_hemp@discuss.tchncs.de ) 4•1 year agoRight, but that’s nothing compared to Gnome 2->3 or KDE 3->4.
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 2•1 year agoOr Gnome 4.0 to 41! xD
unique_hemp ( @unique_hemp@discuss.tchncs.de ) 2•1 year agoThe decision to adopt Chromium style versions was an interesting one for sure…
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 1•1 year agoI mean some programs use 3.0 as stable, some have 3.15 or something as stable and 3.0 as alpha. They do what they do I guess
Pantherina ( @Pantherina@feddit.de ) 3•1 year agoIf you are on Opensuse Leap, Debian or probably also Kubuntu (Ubuntu LTS), no it wont affect you.
Stable = unchanging bugs, not working packages.
On Kubuntu you may get it with “Kubuntu backports” but really just no.
If you are on Fedora KDE then you will have Plasma 6 in a few months! The same probably for Opensuse Tumbleweed, Arch, etc.
Jure Repinc ( @JRepin@lemmy.ml ) 3•1 year agoRunning surprisingly well for a beta. I really hope to find some free time and help some more with reporting the minor bugs left during the end of the year vacation time and help polish for the final release.
