  • It’s still a great little system. It has a large library with a lot of great games (like you said), but also quite a bit of shovelware. The phat and Lite models have backwards compatibility with Game Boy Advance via Slot-2 and a few DS games can interact with the cartridge in Slot-2. There’s also the DSi models which sacrificed the second slot for better hardware and new functionality. The DSi has a few exclusive titles that don’t work on the originals.

There’s also a lot of cool homebrew for the DS family. For phat or Lite models you’ll need a flashcart (I recommend a DSpico as the hardware and software are fully open source). With a DSi it’s possible to softmod the system to run homebrew right off the system SD card.

An important thing to know is that the hinge is a bit of an Achilles’s heel for the system. The plastic of the shell is prone to becoming brittle or even disintegrating over time. Regardless of which model you pick it’s a pain to replace the shell. Additionally, only the Lite has high quality replacement shells available, so if you have a phat, DSi, or DSi XL then you’re kinda out of luck.

  • The only immutable distro I’ve tried is Bazzite. It’s gaming-oriented, but can work well as a desktop. It also does offer a KDE edition, but for some reason they intentionally ship with some GNOME programs instead of the KDE ones. For example, a fresh KDE edition installation includes Ptyxis instead of Konsole.

Also, DistroWatch’s search has the option to only show immutable distros. It’s under the Distribution Category option. I figure that might help you find a few more options.

  • The Pokémon games have a lot of these. One in particular is that in Generations 3 and 4 they added a mechanic to prevent the player from stranding themself by releasing the last Pokémon they have with certain HM moves.

For example, say your obnoxious younger sibling is mad at you. They “borrow” your game, use Fly to go to the obligatory island town, release all your Pokémon except for the weakest one, sell all your item, and waste the money by repeatedly buying and selling items until you don’t have enough to buy anything useful. In Generations 1 and 2 your only real way to get out of this scenario is to trade your remaining Pokémon with one from another cartridge that has either the move Surf or Fly. In Generations 3 and 4 the last Pokémon that knows an essential HM move will refuse to be released. Generations 5 and 6 don’t have this feature because there aren’t any islands. From 7 onwards the HM system was replaced entirely.

  • I have a few, but the one that gets the most use by far is my Womanizer Premium air pulsator. The company’s name isn’t exactly the best, but the products are very effective. I believe this exact model is discontinued, but there is a newer version available. If the name is too uncomfortable there’s also the WeVibe Melt. It’s a different brand, but the same company. Just as a disclaimer, I don’t personally have a Melt, but it’s very highly regarded.

Edit: By the way, the manufacturer is having a big sale right now.

    • Nena - 99 Luftballons
    99 Düsenflieger
    Jeder war ein großer Krieger
    Hielten sich für Captain Kirk
    Es gab ein großes Feuerwerk
    Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
    Und fühlten sich gleich angemacht
    Dabei schoss man am Horizont
    Auf 99 Luftballons

Captain Kirk is mentioned in both the original German and the English version. The reference is actually moved to a different verse in the English version so that it still works.

    • The B-52s - Song for a Future Generation
Wanna be the Captain of the Enterprise
Wanna be the King of the Zulus
Let's meet and have a baby now!

This one might could also be a reference to any one of the many Navy ships with the name, but I choose to believe someone in the band is one of us.
