2·9 months agoYeah, I think that makes sense, thanks so much for the explanation. I should ask though, in that case, should I move myself over to one of those services? If so, which do you recommend? My account here is only new so now would be the best time for me to switch.

2·9 months agoAhh I see. So while there are multiple instances of Lemmy, all of which are under the shitty devs’ thumbs at the end of the day, the mentioned Piefed and kbin are totally different things by different people with similar functionality but no bigotry? Or are they just different instances OF Lemmy like I’m posting from right now, in which case, what makes those two special?

2·9 months agoThanks, I’ll have a look. I was under the impression that Linux phones were unusable at the moment, here’s hoping I’m proven wrong.

3·9 months agoI have that too and it’s so weird. I’ve always had the “ringing ears of silence” since I was little, where if I just sit there, eventually I’ll hear some high ringing. Nowadays it only gets bad if I TRY to focus on it. I never exposed myself to much loud noise without hearing protection (I’ve always had sensitive ears anyway) and I try not to listen to music too loud, so idk why once or twice a month I just get this louder ringing that you describe for a minutes that goes away afterwards.

2·9 months agoThanks, Imma quote this when some dumbass shrugs at me and says we’re all fucked and there’s no hope left. Like, I get feeling depressed about the state of things but it’s such an obvious cop out that it makes me livid whenever I hear it.

1·9 months agoGotcha, I think that makes sense. I don’t know much about Piefed, but hey, if it works it works. I prefer Lemmy anyway because it is integrated like that.

2·9 months agoSorry I’m only getting back to this now, but thank you! I do understand instances and whatnot, but I guess my question boils down to this: if the whole of Lemmy somehow gets influenced by the shitty views of some or all of the devs (I’m not sure how many there are), and a fork is needed, does that bring down all of the instances and existing infrastructure of Lemmy with it? Like, the existing instances won’t be able to upgrade to the latest version, and then if they use the fork instead, will that screw with other things? I guess this is a question for a programmer, but it’s on my mind lol

3·10 months agoSo wait, is this another hub for Lemmy’s servers? How is this different then just accessing Lemmy through a third party app? Is this a totally different platform despite accessing the same servers? I’m a bit confused.

1·10 months agoI see… Yikes. I know nothing about those other projects and I’ll look them up, but are they forks of Lemmy handled by different people, or just front ends TO Lemmy? Apologies if I’m missing something obvious.

4·10 months agoWait so if the Lemmy devs are transphobic… Should there not be a fork at this rate? Also, I’ve heard a lot of shit talked about .ml and seemingly for good reason but what’s the story with all this? How did it get this bad?

I love how this is my first Lemmy comment ever.

Oh, I found Graphene excellent! It’s just the notifications are pretty essential and I cannot get them working outside of one app. That’s the only reason I criticized it.
Are the Jolla and the FLX1 harder to swap OSes on if needed, like you said? I’ll consider the Fairphone as I know it’s the most popular option, but I’ve also heard criticisms of parts not being available or software support being dropped. Few and far between but considering how much good press it’s gotten, I’d appreciate your take on that. That said I’m sure they wouldn’t mind using an app emulator as long as it’s functional. I’ve helped them get Windows games running through Wine on Mint and also got them the BizHawk emulator for old games and stuff, so they’re no strangers! haha
But hey, thanks so much for this, it’s really helpful.
