Given the political direction most Westernised countries are heading, the kindest possible interpretation of that is breathtaking naivety on their part. Of course people are going to question why on earth far-right extremists are allowed to have unvetted ability to sponsor software.

To me, the essence of privacy software is the ability to ‘verify, not trust’ which is why the ties between privacy and open source are so strong. Proton are currently doing the opposite of that in how they run their company. A lot of people have had enough of tech companies half-arsing their approach and now refuse to just let these seemingly small things slide - mainly because they sometimes snowball into much larger things.

None of this is a smear campaign, its just a valid take on what people see unfolding in front of them.

Of course, but they are a software development company. Its the strategy (or lack of it) I’m criticising, not their ability to write code.

I believe them when they say this was an error of vetting because they’d have to be naive to think this wouldn’t be discovered and that a lot of their customers would have an issue with it. But that in itself is troubling. Proton are not some small-fry company with staff numbers in the single digits. Something like this speaks to their lack of planning, organisation and error-checking which are very bad traits for a privacy-centered set of software developers to have.

I’ve always been slightly suspicious of Proton without really knowing why but this and the previous Trump thing have made those suspicions more hardened. Everyone makes mistakes but to not even do basic checking and to lack the organisation and judgement to implement it is not something that inspires trust in the software they develop.

I mean, yes, I agree - don’t use them - but this is less an issue of stopping using Meta and more about worrying about who around you is. With this tech, you don’t need to be a Meta user, you’ll still be captured, stored, tracked and sold.

Shit like this is why I’m still trying to make up my mind about the Greens. I hope Polanski takes swift action against this candidate and all others who can’t see the difference between anti-zionism and anti-semitism.

As far as I can tell, none of their stuff is open source which is an immediate ‘no thanks’ from me. I am done just blindly trusting companies with my data, especially where there’s a load of good alternatives.
