I am often fatigued by Cassandras. They are right, of course, but its their curse. They are EXHAUSTING. Cory Doctorow is a Cassandra that often offers perspectives to show the way out (or A way out) of whatever doom he’s presenting. And pragmatism is part of why I like him. I’m tired of purism.
It might turn out to have more drawbacks than advantages. But to all the “terrible idea, stupid idea” folks in here… What’s up with the 'tude? We’re going to need a lot of ideas. Some will COME OUT of other ideas that didn’t work, but that somebody wanted to try anyway. It’s 100 linear meters. It’s a way to start quantifying the vibrations, the dirt, etc that y’all seem so sure will doom the project (and maybe will)
Solarpunk is about innovation and creative use of technology. This is it. It might be wrong in the long run but somebody will learn something in the process.

My mind went to sounding balloons electronics. Launched multiple times a day from multiple locations, land pretty much wherever, often recovered by amateurs but often not. Electronics are not the worst environmental offender on those payloads (batteries, Styrofoam case…) but it checks the tickboxes of short lived electronics.
I’m with you. I find the complaints about it so weird. It sounds like “I like this show but I wish it were another show”. There’s plenty to discuss and dislike, but the pace is such a basic part of it.
17% extra isn’t much, especially if the manufacturing is within the EU, where it could be seen as an investment.
It’s not zero either. I wish the real “savings” of relying on final products imports would be more quantified like this. It might not be worth it, sometimes.
But then, how much of that supply chain is china-free, once you go past the first level of the bill of materials.
I was “disappointed” with the lack of development in what we know about the others, but the episode was very good. I am not sure how to say that without sounding judgmental but if you feel the need to fast forward scenes without talking you’re probably unaware that in a visual medium images tell part of the story. Possibly not an accessible series (I hope there are audio tracks for visually impaired folks) but flushing half of it down the toilet says more about what dopamine-factory-media did to our brains in the past few years than it says about pluribus itself.
I think she would have a similar relationship to the one with Zosia, except the Sodium thiopental trick. She would reject her as truly Helen, but she would be drawn to her (they picked lady pirate for a reason) in a more trusting way, perhaps eventually. In general, it would be a lower drama story, and the choice, painful as it was, worked well for the story.
They seem to be good at channeling the memories and mannerism of a specific individual (Ravi, the indian kid, behaves like a kid) when appropriate. I would demand to “talk” to Helen (or, like, my wife, if I put myself in Carol’s shoes) through another Plurb individual. I would probably profoundly dislike the experience, assuming they would be able to attempt it, as uncanny-valley-like and I would doubt the genuinity of it (would I talk with a AI that is the sum of the knowledge and mannerism of my wife? Would that be my wife? Hard pass, but in that context, I wonder if it would help me get into the frame of mind to ask better questions)

Jealous. I recently redid my roof and removed a sloped window in the attic to make room for more solar. The removed window frame and glass sat in the attic all summer and I was imagining using it for something like that. What was stopping me was the fact that it was relatively small and not very deep. … But I waited too long and it was cleared out with the rest of the construction debris. My winter salad would be doing better right now.

Do you run any bridge (I forget the XMPP nomenclature). One of the reasons I run matrix (synapse) myself is to have a single interface for many instant-message platforms. I’ve been looking into migrating to XMPP (im sure my matrix deployment can be slimmed down but for now it’s a behemoth taking 4 GB of RAM…) but I’ve been somewhat discouraged by the process
I sync to a local directory and then sync that with syncthing. It works.
The sync file is a big json thing, so concurrent edits are not exactly supported, but you get a pop up to warn you if you have diverging changes.
I worked in a couple of major european projects that had SLES everywhere, and I don’t remember official support being a topic at all.
What exactly is the use case for enterprise support? Where does it help and/or save money? I’m not challenging the concept, I’m genuinely curious because despite having worked in places where I assume it would make sense I have never seen it and never understood why would anybody pay for that.

Hard agree on IAM granularity. But breaking up things in projects limits the blast radius somewhat. They’ll get there.
I took the screenshot then and I was too lazy to do it again before posting :) Also, sometimes the integration that does the prediction becomes more realistic and the difference would have been less strong. But it looks like it didn’t re-evaluate the prediction, and the second half of the day was even worse :)
You are correct of course, generation happens without direct sunlight. In fact, today it was raining and I never saw the sun (until literally 5 minutes before sunset, go figure). It’s actually awesome to get what I get on a rainy day, jokes aside.
I can confidently say that there was no direct sunlight involved today because I have panels on the northwest side, that doesn’t get any direct sunlight these days, and they behaved just like the south. Even pale sun makes the south take off way past whatever the north string can do. Didn’t happen today
You seem to be interested in selfhosting so I encourage you to learn and follow the other comments but… … I’m here to remind who needs to hear this that there should exist small communities where the average member doesn’t give a flying TCP packet of what “coturn” is. Using smolweb technologies doesn’t need to imply operating the infrastructure.
