Niantic says it is using data generated by Pokémon Go players to create a “Large Geospatial Model” that can navigate the real world and power robots.

    I’d imagine it will use the relative movement speeds in different places to identify roads versus travel on foot. Remember, it wouldn’t let you use a number of its features if you were traveling at a speed that it suspected indicated being in a vehicle.
