If you’re wondering what model to get, if you can use a screwdriver and follow simple instructions you can purchase the 64gb model and then get a 256gb NVME ssd(Samsung pm991) for ~35 off amazon. Takes only a couple minutes to remove/install the drive. Takes longer to reinstall steamOS to your device.
I did this in March when the first steamdeck sale happened. Haven’t had a single issue with my ssd - other than the updater saying my ssd needs a firmware update but fails on the install.
Don’t use a cheap no-name brand(Onn, etc) USB stick for your steamOS recovery image. I tried several and they all would claim install success but the OS would get stuck in a boot loop in the reboot after “successful installation”.
I ended up buying a cheap Sandisk and it worked like a charm. I also got an anti-glare screen protector which does wonders for outdoor gaming.
No model is really the wrong option though - I was on a budget and needed to get the most for the least. And you get to jump right into it instead of instantly taking it apart.
Just enjoy that new steam deck fan exhaust smell while it lasts.
It does probably make more sense to just get the cheap one and upgrade, but the etched glass is way better than matte screen protectors. There is no comparison.
While I haven’t seen it in person, I’d be willing to bet you’re correct. However with that option only on the 512gb model - I can’t really say if it justifies the price you’re paying just for that feature - or the other minuscule bits you get with the 512 model.
This was replacing my rpi4 as my primary desktop, so it spends most of its time docked and hooked up to an external monitor anyway. The amount I’ve used it outdoors, the matte protector has done well enough. I’d have felt foolish spending that extra hundred+ just for that feature I rarely need.

Maybe I should have read that two days ago, but 512 GB it is for me now.
I hate that it isn’t here yet 🙄
