Key word there being “probably” but you actually won’t because the barrier to entry is getting your friends to switch. And your friends will want to be wherever everyone else is, which is discord.
Also Matrix is opensource and self hostable but you don’t see people switching, because 1, running your own server with many separate services that all need to work together and have decent uptime is hard. 2. Everyone is already on discord.
If Matrix, or something better, could actually do what Discord does, we’d all probably switch to it. We already run very busy Mumble and XMPP servers on top of Discord.
Why wouldn’t you use the currently best free voice/instant chat service available?
Give me something that actually works just as well but is open source and self hostable and I’ll probably switch.
