Windows PC. Why? Modding, first and foremost. Gaming without mods is like pizza without toppings—it’ll do in a pinch, but it’s nowhere near as good.
I’ve also, at various times, gamed on:
My phone
My Linux desktop
A Nintendo DS Lite
An SNES
A Nintendo Game Boy
But the vast majority of my gaming has long been on PC. I’ve been a PC gamer almost from the very beginning, thanks mostly to the fact that the first gaming-capable device I had consistent access to was my parents’ 486 PC, and in all these years, this platform has never let me down.
What is your favorite game to mod? I’m a casual gamer and never got into modding at all. I know that Skyrim has an absurdly large mod ecosystem, but other than that what am I missing out on?
The other Elder Scrolls and Fallout titles have the same mod situation as Skyrim.
Doom 1 and 2 are pretty much where the modding scene got serious. You’ll find a staggering amount of mods for those games, especially custom maps.
The Quake, Half-Life, Team Fortress, and Unreal Tournament games had large modding communities, but mostly focused on multiplayer, and now there aren’t many people to play those mods with. That’s the problem with multiplayer…
Lately, I’ve been running a modded MechWarrior 5. The game has been criticized for seriously limiting the extent to which you can customize your 'Mechs, and the mod “Yet Another Mechlab” removes those limitations, making the game much more interesting.
Some games without a modding community still have a few small mods. There is, for example, a Mortal Kombat 9 mod that lets you play as the bosses (Goro, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn).
