as i recall, when i went in to get my wisdom teeth removed three-ish years ago (or another medical procedure, i forget the exact details) my parents had to explicitly ask for non-opiate painkillers to be prescribed for when i went home, because the default was an opiate!
oh yeah no, i’m american, and in hindsight it’s super fucking weird that we even had to ask because an opiate is kind of overkill for such a short-term, not especially painful procedure. i only had to take what they gave me (i think it was ibuprofen?) for three or so days and it’s not like they followed up to see if i’d used my entire prescription.
