Damn it. There’s nothing less cool than something becoming cool.

I discovered a few bands from their Tiny Desk concert. The best of all was Khruangbin.
As another comment alluded to, it’s all but certain that TINY DESK has now jumped the shark.
It did take a while.

Do you mean Tiny Desk or Khruangbin has jumped the shark? If it is Tiny Desk, not sure how showing live music could jump the shark
- demesisx ( @demesisx@infosec.pub ) English9•9 months ago
TINY DESK! 🤦🏻♂️
It’s easy to imagine how they will jump the shark in the future. Look at enshittification.
How about them being so selective with who they pick that they don’t choose any good music in the future but instead choose Taylor Swift and other acts that are so mainstream that it’s like watching the Grammy’s? That’s easy to imagine. It’ll happen and we won’t be able to find new, obscure, amazing acts like Khruangbin through their show because that’s exactly how this type of thing happens.

Tiny desk has had very big names on before and managed to not jump the shark. Lizzo, Moby, The Cranberries, and a lot more. The fortunate thing is that the chance for enshittification is pretty low since it is publically funded. It is possible when Bob Boilen moves on it could take a turn, but the people below him seem to be pretty passionate about the same mission.
- demesisx ( @demesisx@infosec.pub ) English8•9 months ago
I get it. They had Adele near the beginning.
Still, IMO things that successful have a tendency to veer toward enthittification on a long enough timeline.
- Vodulas [they/them] ( @Vodulas@beehaw.org ) 2•9 months ago
Sure, but things from NPR are especially resilient to that thanks to the public broadcast model. Tiny Desk is also particularly sheltered from jumping the shark thanks to the curators that fully understand what they have. Not saying it is impossible, but it is in a pretty good spot on both fronts

Boilen has already moved on and retired at the end of 2023 iirc.
- Vodulas [they/them] ( @Vodulas@beehaw.org ) 1•9 months ago
Good to know. I personally think the people around him that came up in the Tiny Desk are still going to be good curators.

They had Taylor swift play in 2019

- From the way you use the word, it’s clear you don’t know what enshittification means
- You sound like the kind of person who dislikes anything that’s too popular. Chill

From the way that you reply to and insult a random stranger engaged in lighthearted conversation with someone else about something that doesn’t even matter I can tell that you’re a crappy unhappy person that gets off on being right with people who aren’t even disagreeing with you.
Sign off.

Tiny desk are always instant plays for me. I wonder if NPR gains monetization from the views for their budget.

I wish the stations I can tune in to offered this, but they’re all talk and no Tiny Desk. It really is a great show.

If you like Tiny Desk, I recommend the Like A Version series by Australia’s Triple J radio station on YouTube. Some fantastic performances.

Along a similar vein, you can catch some cool live performances of lesser known acts on the KEXP youtube channel. They interview the artists too, which is cool. They often come up in search results for artists I look up on Youtube, and my music taste tends toward the indie (as in independent, not the sound genre).

I didn’t have my glasses on, and wondered why the Tiny Dick Concerts penetrated into my TL.

Found an interest in Sahara Rock from Tiny Desk. I’ve been listening to Tiny Desk videos for years.

NEW YORK (AP) — As DJ Mannie Fresh’s trademark “ladies and gentlemen” catchphrase ricocheted throughout the office, a giddy Juvenile, draped in white with his signature bandana, playfully swayed back and forth to the beat of his musicians.
“It was such a milestone …some people want to forget certain things in their life so badly,” said the 26-year-old Latina star, who ended her predominately Spanish-language set with “Shower,” a song released nearly a decade ago.
Tiny Desk producers sort through hundreds of weekly pitch emails regarding artists of all genres, famous and unknown, international and domestic, while also monitoring social media.
With more than 1,100 tapings, Tiny Desk has drawn heavy comparisons to MTV’s groundbreaking “Unplugged” series of the ’90s, but there’s one major difference: It’s a true office space — not a recording studio or soundstage.
The concerts remained niche, but five years later, it exploded after then-producer Frannie Kelley booked T-Pain – the chart-topping rapper-singer — who delivered one of Tiny Desk’s memorable performances by shedding his Auto-Tune sound.
Many also had no idea that his guest, producer Mike Dean — most associated with some of Ye’s (Kanye West) biggest hits — was an early collaborator of the Geto Boys star, cutting his teeth with the pioneering southern label, Rap-A-Lot.
