It’s when the Americans already went to bed but the Europeans didn’t wake up yet. I’m in South Korea and around lunch even sorting by “New” doesn’t give me any new posts, sometimes up to one hour.

Greetings from China! I’m not much of a poster though, so admittedly my interactions are by and large restricted to comments.
I’m always browsing Lemmy by /new though (with a well curated block, ban and keyword filter), and the Australians are quite active during those times.
Hm perhaps I’m missing out on some Australian content? Any tiops on communities?
I guess the content from China is mostly in Chinese?
- viking ( @viking@infosec.pub ) English12•29 days ago
I don’t think there are any actual Chinese communities, at least I’m not active in any. And I’m not actively following anything from Australia either really. I’ve come to terms with the fact that there’s fairly little stuff posted on Lemmy in general, so browsing all (instead of subscriptions) and sorting by new is how I find stuff.
Yeah that makes sense. I’m on a single user instance where subscribed and /all is exactly the same which makes the problem even bigger.

There are Australians producing content on all the usual communities. Unless you’re interested specifically in content about Australia or aimed towards other Australians in particular, you’re probably not missing out on anything.
If that is what you want, check the communities hosted on aussie.zone.

do you use VPN to connect from China or you can connect without it?
- viking ( @viking@infosec.pub ) English5•29 days ago
Some instances are available, so federated content is visible if you’re on one that works. But external links often don’t, and you generally want to hide your online presence even if the sites you visit are not blocked, so I’m using a VPN near 24/7.
- cobra89 ( @cobra89@beehaw.org ) English1•28 days ago
I’m surprised the great firewall doesn’t block known blocks of VPN IP addresses.
- viking ( @viking@infosec.pub ) English1•27 days ago
Impossible, VPN providers rent server space in large data centers, just like any other “legitimate” service. If they were to blacklist entire blocks, they’d shut out a number of services people are, meant to use.
So they’d have to surgically blacklist individual IP addresses - which they do, mind you - but it’s a matter of 3 clicks for the VPN provider to change to any other IP within the data center. And they operate in hundreds of locations globally, so even if one is shut down for good, you got plenty of alternatives.

Be the change you want to see. On Lemmy, it actually matters to the entire community what you do. If you post a few things every day, other people in the same area will see some activity. :)
- whoareu ( @kionite231@lemmy.ca ) English5•29 days ago
no OP but I really try to post something interesting or not interesting but I at least post and comment whenever I can :)
- 🇰 🔵 🇱 🇦 🇳 🇦 🇰 ℹ️ ( @Kolanaki@yiffit.net ) English13•29 days ago
I never sleep and I’m always on Lemmy. But I comment and don’t usually make posts. 🤷🏻♂️
- imaqtpie ( @imaqtpie@lemmy.myserv.one ) English1•28 days ago
Same dude. But you make me look like a God damned casual 😅
Someone needs to make a leaderboard for the most active Lemmy users, that’d be really entertaining
- PenguinCoder ( @Penguincoder@beehaw.org ) English13•29 days ago
Hi Jeena! What instances are on your federation lists for jemmy.jeena.net? What “languages” are selected for the federation/your profile? There’s a few active instances at this time, but does depend on if you’re subscribed to them, and the languages they send (and your instance accepts).
So I only browse my subscribed ones which are all in English, German, Polish and Swedish. On the Korean one it looks like I’m the only one posting there ^^
- PenguinCoder ( @Penguincoder@beehaw.org ) English4•29 days ago
Check your settings for https://jemmy.jeena.net/admin. Is Private instance checked? (Probably shouldn’t be). IS federation enabled checked (It should be) Anything listed in allowed instances? What about blocked instances? Languages should have everything listed, including
Undetermined
.No worries technically everything works with my instance, I’m just subscribed to communities which don’t post much around my lunch time.

Hello from Singapore
- rufus ( @rufus@discuss.tchncs.de ) English7•29 days ago
Hmmh, your post shows 04:50 in the morning. That’s definitely a time even the insomniacs would be asleep in Europe.
It’s a bit better for us. When I go to bed, the Americans from the east start to come home from work. (And there is a good amount of Germans here on Lemmy.)
- Call me Lenny/Leni ( @shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee ) English7•29 days ago
I have irregular hours so you have an equal chance of reaching me no matter the time.
- Hjalmar ( @Hjalamanger@feddit.nu ) English6•29 days ago
And hello from Europe (sweden)! I visited Korea last year and whilst I wasn’t using Lemmy then those time difference really made it hard to talk to anyone who happened to find them self in Europe.
And for a solution to the problem, maybe there are some Korean communities with a bit more activity during that time?
Nope from what I know there is only one Korean instance with one community and I am practically the only one posting to it ^^
- whoareu ( @kionite231@lemmy.ca ) English3•29 days ago
at least you got one. there is no Indian instance. It would be full of shit anyway so I really don’t care but still I want it to exist.
- SoleInvictus ( @SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English1•28 days ago
Doooo it! Make an Indian instance!
- zabadoh ( @zabadoh@ani.social ) English5•29 days ago
Hello, it’s just the middle of the evening on the West Coast of the USA.
- JimSamtanko ( @JimSamtanko@lemm.ee ) English4•29 days ago
West coast of America, checking in!
- TheOakTree ( @TheOakTree@lemm.ee ) English4•28 days ago
Hi Jeena, I’m visiting South Korea right now and also noticed the drought around that time. How can we get more Koreans to use Lemmy, I wonder?
Probably by creating good content on Lemmy in Korean and linking to it from where the Koreans normally are ^^
- Shyfer ( @Shyfer@ttrpg.network ) English2•28 days ago
Someone needs to make a Korean instance, like the German one and other ones.
- hitagi (ani.social) ( @hitagi@ani.social ) English4•28 days ago
there’s lemmy.funami.tech iirc
Yeah exactly, that is where I’m posting. But it’s very empty and I have no idea about the admin who he/she is and why they host it.
- zero_spelled_with_an_ecks ( @zero_spelled_with_an_ecks@programming.dev ) English3•29 days ago
Just heading to bed on the west coast of the US. I’m surprised there aren’t some Aussies kicking about.
- CouncilOfFriends ( @CouncilOfFriends@slrpnk.net ) English3•28 days ago
I will remember to post, if I can ever think of something interesting to say.
- hexagonwin ( @hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org ) English1•29 days ago
just curious but where are you in korea?
- hexagonwin ( @hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org ) English1•28 days ago
damn i’m very near you lol (about <3 train stations)
Haha, oh around where? Perhaps we can have a Lemmy summit in Korea :p
Are you on !korea@lemmy.funami.tech ? We need more people posting there :p
- hexagonwin ( @hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org ) English2•27 days ago
not sure if there’d be anyone else coming though lol
yeah i’m already joined there, seems like i found it when joining lemmy at first
