Thinking of trying this out. I am seeing GrubHub, DoorDash, Postmates, UberEats. Where to go?
- SurfinBird ( @SurfinBird@lemmy.ca ) 26•5 months ago
Avoid those. Call the restaurant directly or use their website. Because capitalism.
- governorkeagan ( @governorkeagan@lemdro.id ) English3•5 months ago
Some smaller restaurants rely on these third parties as they can’t pay for drivers.
- SurfinBird ( @SurfinBird@lemmy.ca ) 11•5 months ago
Let them tell you which one they prefer then.
- treadful ( @treadful@lemmy.zip ) English7•5 months ago
In that case they’ll likely suggest you use one of those sites on theirs.
- 30p87 ( @30p87@feddit.de ) 2•5 months ago
At that point it’s better for me to just get the food directly, because I’m the most socially incompetent person alive, especially on the phone.
- SorteKanin ( @SorteKanin@feddit.dk ) 12•5 months ago
I always try to order from the restaurant’s own website, as I know I support the restaurant the most in that case. Sometimes it’s even cheaper on their own site.
Otherwise I mostly use Wolt. The other option is Just Eat. There’s not really any other options afaik which is kind of problematic (semi monopoly situation).
- bionicjoey ( @bionicjoey@lemmy.ca ) 7•5 months ago
All of these are basically equivalent in my experience. However, I normally use these apps (usually Uber eats) with the pickup option to just advance order from a place within 5 minutes of me and go get the food myself. My goal when eating out is to save time by not cooking. The travel time and effort are negligible by comparison.
- AlternateRoute ( @AlternateRoute@lemmy.ca ) English6•5 months ago
In general ordering direct and doing pickup is WAY cheaper than any of the delivery options.
- bionicjoey ( @bionicjoey@lemmy.ca ) 1•5 months ago
Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s within a dollar of the same cost as ordering in person. And it saves having to wait in line, tell them your order, and wait for them to make it.
- AlternateRoute ( @AlternateRoute@lemmy.ca ) English2•5 months ago
Not factoring in the monthly fee? Cost per Oder ? Tip?
Most restaurants you call ahead and just pickup your order when it is ready. Gas food places almost all have online order apps to do the same.
It is convenient but if you are using these services multiple times a month you are spending WAY more on dining out
- bionicjoey ( @bionicjoey@lemmy.ca ) 2•5 months ago
There’s no monthly fee to use Uber eats and I’d be tipping the same amount either way. The cost per order isn’t very high if you’re using the pickup option.
- Geobloke ( @Geobloke@lemm.ee ) 4•5 months ago
I mostly just use the app as a menu, write down what I want and can the restaurant. Makes it cheaper by cutting out the middle man
- Interstellar_1 ( @Interstellar_1@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 5•5 months ago
Phone number, because most places well have a online menu, and that way I don’t have to deal with a third party or a confusing web interface.
- tobogganablaze ( @tobogganablaze@lemmus.org ) English1•5 months ago
I don’t have to deal with a third party or a confusing web interface.
Right, instead you have to talk with someone the phone. I’ll take the website.
- Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English4•5 months ago
DoorDash, but make sure to take distance to restaurant into account when you tip.
Lots of restaurants (most!) don’t deliver, so calling them directly like others suggested usually won’t do any good.
- FiveMacs ( @Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca ) 1•5 months ago
‘hi restaurant, can I get pickup? Thanks for saying I’m responsible with my finances, oh and yes I enjoy the exercise walking to pickup my food’
- Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English1•5 months ago
Glad you live close enough to the restaurant to walk! That’s not realistic for everyone
- FiveMacs ( @Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca ) 1•5 months ago
Sure it is.
- Schaedelbach ( @Schaedelbach@feddit.de ) 4•5 months ago
There is a local service/app in my city called Yuze. It has only a small selection of restaurants. The service the app has is pretty basic: you order food and it gets brought to you by a handful of (employed!) riders. No in-app tip BS, no hidden service charges - it’s great! Haven’t used Lieferando (takeaway.com’s name in Germany) in forever. Downsides: the food selection is limited and the restaurants tend to be on the more pricier side.
- Fizz ( @Fizz@lemmy.nz ) 4•5 months ago
You can sign up the Uber eats and get a full refund on your orders. Do this until they start instantly denying any refund request. Uber eats still pays the restaurant and the driver. They eat the cost.
I easily got refunded $600 worth of food before they caught on. Got my work phone and did it again but this time to a park nearby my house because my house is blacklisted it seems.
- Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English0•5 months ago
The driver gets no tip when this happens, Uber pays them like $2
- blindsight ( @blindsight@beehaw.org ) 3•5 months ago
When I use these services (when I’m given a gift card) I select $0 tip and tip with cash. I don’t trust the app makers to give them the tip. I hope parent poster does this, too. I thought tipping in cash was pretty common!
- Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English3•5 months ago
That’s fair! Definitely had a few cash tips but it’s rare enough that I’d decline it since no-tippers don’t add anything 99% of the time
- Fizz ( @Fizz@lemmy.nz ) 1•5 months ago
If the driver is delivering to me they weren’t getting a tip anyway.
- Gamma ( @GammaGames@beehaw.org ) English1•5 months ago
Wow
- mke_geek ( @mke_geek@lemm.ee ) 3•5 months ago
I hardly ever order food to my home. One time in the past 5 years I’ve ordered pizza and had someone deliver it. It’s not worth the cost.
I rarely go out for fast food.
- Vaggumon ( @Vaggumon@lemm.ee ) 2•5 months ago
Grub Hub - Legally blind, can’t drive, gives me way more options than Pizza and Chinese.
- HobbitFoot ( @HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club ) English1•5 months ago
I used UberEats except for when I got a gift card for DoorDash. I’ve seen some restaurants stop using UberEats while they still use DoorDash. There really isn’t difference in terms of delivery service quality.
- tobogganablaze ( @tobogganablaze@lemmus.org ) English1•5 months ago
“Just Eat” works great and is my go-to.
Tried UberEats but they seem slow and food always ends up beeing cold. I don’t think we have any of the other ones.
