rico (she/him) ( @RicoSuave@feddit.cl ) 10•2 months agoi speak spanish, a very common language in the us. most of my friends were also spanish speakers, so we did this a lot, especially if we were discussing something personal between us, dirty, or talking about another teacher.
obviously, we didn’t do this around a spanish teacher or a spanish-speaking one, but we did this a lot most of the time.
eldavi ( @eldavi@lemmy.ml ) English4•2 months agoi was usually the teacher’s pet and they would ask me what you guys said, and i would only tell them the truth if i liked the teacher. lol

I’ve seen girls in high school do that
Truffle ( @Truffle@lemmy.ml ) 5•2 months agoMe and my sibling were tired of my mom eavesdropping whenever so we learned another language to communicate between us. It would drive her crazy but she never bothered to learn to speak said language, so that’s on her.

nasi_goreng ( @nasi_goreng@lemmy.zip ) 3•2 months agoA lot. Indonesian is the world’s biggest trilinguist country.
People usually speaks their local languages (there are 700+ of them), Indonesian, and other foreign language.
In my class alone there are probably 8 languages spoken by the student (usually Indonesian, Javanese, Sundanese, Banjarese, Balinese, Indonesian, Chinese, Madurese, and so on), so they can just gossiping about things and the teacher or friends wouldn’t know anything.

Otherbarry ( @Otherbarry@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz ) English2•2 months agoNever did that on purpose.
In fact it wouldn’t even had occurred to me to try to do that speaking spanish - The school district I went to growing up is about 60% hispanic so most of the teachers knew at least some spanish.
Drew ( @crmsnbleyd@sopuli.xyz ) 2•2 months agoThe teachers also knew the language
Churbleyimyam ( @Churbleyimyam@lemm.ee ) 2•2 months agoWhen we about 10 my friend and I learnt to speak backslang for this very purpose.
Incredibly, it turned out that the teacher had learnt how to speak it too.
filtoid ( @filtoid@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 months agoWhen I was at school (UK) there was a German girl and a Swiss girl talking in German and one of them said “Scheiser” really loudly, the teacher turnes and glared at them and slowly they realised why and had to apologise to the teacher, as they hadn’t really thought that while he couldn’t understand, he still knew the swear words!
Wasn’t a big deal was just funny and everyone laughed (incl teacher), needless to say they were a bit more cautious after that.
