I’ll start with Saul Williams. I found out about him because he opened for NiN. He was great. I thought he was going to break through when I heard him in a Nike commerical, but nope his social conscious rap didn’t catch on.
What people or groups do you think should be more popular? Also name/link some songs.
No man is an island, but I often feel alone, so I find peace through…ooohhmmmm…

Semisimian ( @semisimian@startrek.website ) English1•2 hours agoHe’s great. I first heard him on a Ninja Tune compilation. I got to see him in a 100 seater doing a poetry night. All snaps!
navordar ( @nawordar@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 hours agoDe Staat, it’s a really creative experimental rock band from The Netherlands. Bubble Gum is my favorite, but also check out the Vinticious Versions album which contains their songs in vintage style. They also have a talent for powerful album outros. The Inevitable End and Luther always give me goosebumps
Match!! ( @match@pawb.social ) English2•5 hours agoJanelle Monae has had some genius and beautiful sci fi going through all their music, as well as supreme bops, yet is absolutely nowhere near the pop queen she should be
I love Janelle Monae. Lipstick lover, Make Me Feel, and I Like That are a few of her amazing catalogue.
Drew ( @crmsnbleyd@sopuli.xyz ) 3•6 hours agoCar seat headrest. Their songwriting and music choices blend together into something timeless and un-explainable. They’re my favourite band.
humanspiral ( @humanspiral@lemmy.ca ) 1•5 hours ago Moonguide ( @Moonguide@lemmy.ml ) 5•22 hours agoThe Neighborhood Kids. They’re a small-ish rap group whose biggest song has a bit over quarter million streams on Spotify (Biddi Bomb). They’re really interesting because they sound and feel like politically active 90s west coast rap. Great beats, great lyrics, and very creative.
A complete 180 from what tops the charts nowadays. Biddi bomb is their biggest song and is rap through and through, while Third World Problems feels RATM. I honestly hope they keep at it because I love what they’re doing.
You described The Neighborhood Kids perfectly. I took a quick look into their music and I am enjoying it. Thanks. This is the type of music I need in my life.
TheWeirdestCunt ( @TheWeirdestCunt@lemm.ee ) English9•1 day agoRefused, I found out about them cause they were the band who did all the Samurai songs in cyberpunk 2077 and even though they had a bit of a bump they’re still really obscure
Now this is a band I should have known about. They remind me of Weezer, if Weezer was more hardcore. The melodic metal songs remind me of Evergreen Terrace. New noise is great. The Shape of Punk to Come was awesome. This is the high energy rock, I need in my life. Thank you.
“Shape of Punk to Come” is chefs kiss been bumping that shit for over 20 years now and it is still great!
Darren ( @DJDarren@sopuli.xyz ) English2•24 hours agoShape of Punk To Come is a straight up masterpiece. Blew my tiny mind in '98, when my world had come to revolve around whatever Epitaph and Fat Wreck were putting out.
Darren ( @DJDarren@sopuli.xyz ) English2•24 hours agoI think Refused are one of those bands who don’t need to be big. They do their thing, then they disband for a while, work on other projects, then come back together.
MyDarkestTimeline01 ( @MyDarkestTimeline01@lemmy.ml ) English2•21 hours agoChuck Ragan.
I thought Chuck Ragan looked too hipster for me to enjoy, but Something May Catch Fire was good.
Now BOYSETSFIRE is my type of jam. I think rock isn’t represented as well as it used to be…
MyDarkestTimeline01 ( @MyDarkestTimeline01@lemmy.ml ) English2•7 hours agoI don’t know man. When I was younger you couldn’t get me to listen to anything other than mainstream rock. But I came off a.stint of playing games like The Flame and The Flood, Hunt: Showdown, and of course Red Dead Redemption 2. And it just…clocked for me. Now my Spotify can’t tell if I love Grunge, Punk, or Folk.
I haven’t been playing the current AAA type games, so maybe that’s why. I have friends that love RDR2 but I enjoy more of the indie games. I’m still waiting for Silk Song to come out.
MyDarkestTimeline01 ( @MyDarkestTimeline01@lemmy.ml ) English2•6 hours agoCan I borrow like…$100? I’ll pay you back right after Silk Song releases.
єχтяανɒgαηт єηzумэ ( @ExtravagantEnzyme@lemm.ee ) English7•1 day agoA band that is slept on hard and legit my favorite active punk band is Get Dead. Their album Dancing With The Curse is unreal cover to cover. It’s just 32 minutes long, but it’s a god damn classic! My favorites on it are Stickup and Confrontation. The signer was a hiphop lyricist originally, which you can kind of hear at times, but I’d say he was meant for punk rock!
This group is great. I will add them to my playlist. They remind of Whole Wheat Bread. https://youtu.be/vq_MzFgMwxA
єχтяανɒgαηт єηzумэ ( @ExtravagantEnzyme@lemm.ee ) English2•3 hours agoI haven’t heard that name is a hot minute, I dug Whole Wheat Bread tough in the early 2000’s! But I’m glad you dig Get Dead, they have a handful of solid albums, I also really like Honesty Lives Elsewhere.
DancingBear ( @DancingBear@midwest.social ) 3•1 day agoSaul Williams did break through…… for a poet.
That is true. I don’t know any other spoken word poet.
4am ( @4am@lemm.ee ) 2•24 hours agoPitchshifter
Listening to Shutdown. I enjoy the melodic metal sound. Genius has more of a hype beat. I will add them to my workout mix.
paequ2 ( @paequ2@lemmy.today ) English4•1 day agoOh’laville: https://www.youtube.com/@Ohlaville
Good band. I’m trying to learn Spanish so listening to Oh’laville will help. El Diablo reminds me of Big Data. https://youtu.be/E8b4xYbEugo
SomGye ( @SomGye@dormi.zone ) 4•1 day agoI would say Dry Cell, who had a fantastic full album and lots of great demo EPs, and by extension their split-off bands, such as Acrylic and Band With No Name.
I looked up Dry Cell, Acrylic, and Band With No Name. I’m thinking I didn’t find the same bands that you did. The Dry Cell I found didn’t look/sound like the Acrylic band and Band with No Name, that I found. Either way I enjoy music so thanks for the direction.
SomGye ( @SomGye@dormi.zone ) 1•6 hours agoHere are some top faves of mine:
- Dry Cell - Ordinary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqTjIN93xfg
- Dry Cell - Under the Sun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xJe3RnjM9A
- Acrylic - Fading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf4xudG8ThA
- Acrylic - Loser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALcAzUEeNSo
- Band With No Name - The Criminal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysaP0Y6K_cY
- Band With No Name - Animallike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNyg0iHz2TQ
Acrylic and BWNN both have the same lead singer (Jeff Gutt) as Dry Cell, but don’t have Judd Gruenbaum (bassist/co-singer) in them. You’re welcome, I hope you enjoy what you hear!
bonn2 ( @bonn2@lemm.ee ) 3•1 day agoFish in a Birdcage is one of my alltime favorites. Great for relaxed listening and tends to have really good stories in the songs as well.
