I accidentally let some of the Anethum get way too leggy, whoops. They’re still pretty freshly germinated, so a little breeze from a fan should fix things and they should straighten up some and get a little stronger. It wasn’t a big dill.
What’s growing on with you all?
xylem ( @xylem@beehaw.org ) English7•12 days agoLast weekend I planted peas, kale, arugula, and radish outside - just the tiniest hint of some arugula coming up so far, but an indoor tray of radishes are germinating very nicely.
I’ve been eyeing the native trees and shrubs in an email I got from Fedco - I think in the future I’m going to have to plant a bunch of viburnums! Need something to replace the invasive buckthorn that pops up all over here.
@LallyLuckFarm I also just planted and scattered some of those milkweed seeds - thanks again for that!
I will say - I was very happy with the viburnums we received from FedCo (but I’m still holding out hope that I’ll see germination on the seeds we sowed last year). I’d also say maybe look into Amelanchier as well, there are a few that have a natural shrub growth pattern and they’re gorgeous (and tasty!)
And you’re very welcome, it was my pleasure! I know I don’t have to tell you but just pay it forward when you get your own seed this year 💕
ocean ( @ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com ) English6•12 days agoMy mint and green onion has gone crazy :)
Yummmmm (not together though)
ocean ( @ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com ) English3•12 days agoObviously you haven’t had my mint and green onion mojito
Where’s the Starship Troopers “would you like to know more” meme where I just keep hitting “YES” over and over
protist ( @protist@mander.xyz ) English5•12 days agoI’ve had onion starts in the ground about two weeks, growing yellow and Texas sweets this year. About to transplant cantaloupe, watermelon, and eggplants outside!
Edit cause all y’all are talking about perennials, my Fuyu persimmon is leafing out and my Mexican plum is covered in white flowers and buzzing with native insects!
That’s so much earlier than we get to plant outside, ohmygosh! Just because I chose to live this far north doesn’t mean I can’t be jealous of you folks further south…
I’m glad to hear about your trees too. Ours up here are just budding and our persimmons have a few more years before I expect fruit. You’re always welcome to talk about whatever garden bounty is exciting and growing!
protist ( @protist@mander.xyz ) English2•11 days agoIn Texas, we play a delicate game between last frost date and sear-your-eyebrows-off heat. Growing here from June-August can be difficult without the proper balance of shade and sun and consistent irrigation. We have a ton of natives that love this weather, but not many are good to eat. All this to say, I’m jealous of people who can have a simple veggie garden all summer!
Chris Remington ( @remington@beehaw.org ) 4•12 days agoEverything I’ve planted on my property are perennials. That includes flowering/insect attracting plants as well as fruit and nut trees (blueberries, raspberries, black walnut and apple). I haven’t gotten into annual/kitchen gardening yet and I may not. This year I’ll focus on methods of landscaping to cut back on the amount of lawn mowing to be done.
Most of our stuff is perennial as well, but there’s always something so nice about cut-and-come-again salad greens and fresh herbs that I’ll gently encourage you to explore. Your space looked gorgeous the last time you shared photos, so I’m excited to hear and/or see what you decide to do!
Chris Remington ( @remington@beehaw.org ) 3•12 days agoMy wife planted salad greens and herbs years ago that I enjoyed. So yeah, I may revisit that.
Perhapsjustsniffit ( @Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca ) 4•12 days agoGreenhouse is full for the first round. Cold weather stuff since we are in Canada. All has germinated in the past couple of days. Mustard, arugula, mizuna, Bok Choi, tatsoi, broccoli, cauliflower and snap peas. Indoors onion seed is planted as well as leeks and celery. We’ve got one row left to prep in the greenhouse and then we wait for outside to thaw.
Great work, that’s awesome! My greenhouse envy continues unabated 😁
Perhapsjustsniffit ( @Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca ) 2•12 days agoI used to be the same. It will happen one day.
