The only reason I know they exist is because Sonic Adventures 2 trivia videos. That, and I’ve seen them while playing SA2, but those are very hazy memories from when I was maybe 5-6 years old.

Oh yes, I remember reading an article about them. They caused many severe injuries and I mean really many.
