They can’t force PSN accounts on PC gamers so they’re dropping out. That’s how it looks to me. Good riddance.
Seems like Sony is no longer prioritizing the multi platform live service market expansion that only encourages people to buy less PlayStation consoles.
I thought Nintendo was the only one who made money on console sales, so it seems like selling on PC would be more profitable especially with higher sales.
They all make money on console sales. Not a lot of money.
Higher games sales is not a win if it encourages consumers to use a non-Sony device. Sony is thinking long term viability of their platform instead of trying to make half a dozen live service games that nobody wants.
The margins on PC are worse. They’re paying extra on porting, on additional marketing, and on customer service, and Steam is taking a huge cut for that privilege. Only releasing on PS5 means the software only needs to be optimized for one unchanging configuration, and any digital sales are run through their own store with less overhead.
Whether that difference in margin is enough to justify console exclusivity, no idea. But selling on PC isn’t as simple as just, “Look, more customers!”
The 30% publishing cut includes offloading networking overhead and is a one time cost. Sony doesn’t need to pay each time there is an update or someone uninstall and reinstalls.
The development process including multiple platforms is an industry standard to the point that if they start with that in mind the even small studios release on multiple platforms. It isn’t as big of a cost as it was before consoles were just specific implementations that start with PC designed components. Porting over a game that was developed 10 years ago as an exclusive is a higher cost, sure, but that isn’t the case for new games.
It is a small up front cost and then free money if it is successful. Helldivers 2 is massively more popular on PC than Playstation, partially because ofbthe larger user base, but by releasing it on steam they are just printing money.
This is funny, given that I remember what a big deal people made about it.
Making PC ports was their strategy for a whole five years! They didn’t even make it an entire console generation.
They were just getting people primed for future live service games. Did Sony port game franchises that didn’t have some lsg in production?
Both god of war and horizon zero dawn?
That’s cool. I’ll wait for the 12-pack “in case you missed it the first time” of these games, later.
No PS games for me anymore then I guess
At one point I was considering getting a used PS4 or something because God of War looked right up my alley. Never pulled the triger because of the cost and because I knew I couldn’t enjoy it as I could on a PC (I’m unable to play games like that on a controller).
So happy I could get it and experience it on a PC. And while I’m sad I won’t be able to get any sequels or the upcoming remake I’m now not buying a PS even harder.
Maybe if they make the PS6 smaller than a house and cheaper than the deposit for one I might buy it.
No see, the goal is the opposite. The PS16 will both be as large as a house and cost as much as one and you will just live inside.
See, Sony’s main source of income is insurance, what better way to sell insurance than to sell homes?
I just… Don’t care. I bought horizon zero dawn, thought it wasn’t good, and never even finished it. I haven’t bothered with any of their other single player pc releases. There’s so many good games already out on PC.
Ok, bye then. I have a ps5 but its collecting dust and i guess it will stay that way because this is stupid.
They are big mad about the steam machine
I wonder if Windows players will now argue that Windows is not a viable gaming platform because one cannot “play all the games”, like many like to do towards Linux.
Whatever makes sense business wise I guess.
