Keep up the good work! I think in today’s social media landscape, we’d benefit from more platforms which don’t claim neutrality, “free speech” or hide the manipulation behind some intransparent “algorithms”. I think it’s very attractive how PieFed is doing 5 bazillion things simultaneousy and at the same time makes an effort to be anti-fascist. And unapologetically so.

  • Great article, I love the concise and direct way you explain your features. No over explaining, just exactly what you want to know, with screenshots. Love it.

    4chan filter

This part made me curious, are we talking about greentext posts? How do you detect them? And could such a filter be made for Twitter, arguably (possibly) an even larger fascist website?

I’d rather not go into it because it’s quite easy to bypass if you know how it works. It’s pretty dumb!

For twitter screenshots I think you’d need some kind of machine learning model because those are less distinctive than greentext.

I made that chart while reading a book (reference in the corner of the image) and I’m sure the author of it was familiar with Eco’s work. He may have even mentioned the term “Ur-fascism” because it sounds familiar to me.

          • Oh that’s Jason Stanley, yeah he would be very familiar with Eco lol. He’s a professor and scholar of political philosophy, he left the United States and took a position at the University of Toronto.

I love this, not simply because I support the desired end result but because it shows such a deep understanding of the topic rather than latching onto it as a buzzword (ie it doesn’t “impoverish vocabulary”)

These are the measured decisions that convinced me to get pied in the first place

Lots to consider in that diagram alone. Indeed, I’m a little surprised that post-WWII, there didn’t seem to be a significant curriculum about recognising the seeds & mechanisms of fascism. Not in the States anyway, and if I understand correctly, in Europe it was moreso the history of recent, significant fascism that was taught, not so much a dive in to its causes and inner workings, which IMO went right back to the terrible propaganda effects of PEZ in the modern era. Pity.

Also if you make a big mistake and the crowd has taught you a hard lesson you can do a public retraction and move on:

Shoot, I could have used that option the other day. Unfortunately (and arguably I did make a key mistake), I got deeply offended by one community’s userbase reaction to a post of mine, and abandoned what had been an ongoing posting project meant to revive a stagnant community, which had otherwise been met with flying colors.

Oof. Well you live, you learn.

The same is true for Brazil and, I suppose, most of Latin America. We are “taught” about European fascism and nazism only as “Italy elected Mussolini and Germany elected Hitler, and that was bad”. Considering that the continent was swept in a series of dictatorships soon after WWII, it’s no surprise.

I like the idea for “managing conflict”, but to me it seems that the other measures are more of “fight fire with fire” type of thing. Things don’t have to be so polarizing and polarized.

  • Arguably the damage caused by Truth Social to the world is greater than the good Mastodon brought to a few of us.

Well that is just nonsense. Truth social has no relevance whatsoever. If it didnt exist, they would just go somewhere else and make things worse there.

Otherwise some good ideas in this post :)

Yes, but isn’t Mastodon fairly unique in being FOSS, peer-to-peer oriented, well-tested, and built successfully to scale up with large userbases (and presumably remotely connected servers)?

Surely there are enough unique qualities to it that the likelihood of simply grabbing something similar would be pretty low. I’m thinking they probably chose Mastodon for specific reasons, rather than just ‘going anywhere else.’

      • Im saying it makes no difference where he posts. Truth social or twitter or reddit or 4chan. Its not like he is getting more reach through truth social than he would through other platforms. If anything its a net improvement that he made his own little island where everyone can just ignore him.

I read through this but it seems like the ideal is there but I don’t see anything beyond a minor annoyance, settings that are easily turned off. I chuckled at the early example when you said it could be turned off with one click. Seems to defeat your entire purpose.

Not saying I know THE solution nor that your ideal is wrong. This is a great idea that I’ve never considered and I didn’t know about Mastodon.
