I feel good knowing I saved the cart return guy 15 seconds. His day will not be improved because he still needs to move all the carts; and when that task ends there will be another. I understand this, but I still feel like I made the place better than I found it. Where I am, it’s hot-AF outside right now, so I hope that I’m making the next indoor task sooner and my time is appreciated – but my time is literally like <1 minute, so I know it’s not a lot of anti-entropy.

I live in a world where a small cartel controls every major grocery store in the entire country and is frequently accused or charged with price fixing. They openly lobby my government for obscured pricing and mechanized gouging. They can return their own fucking shopping carts, I’m stealing shit.
All you’re doing is making some underpaid employee’s day harder, and causing problems for the other people who have no choice but to shop at the cartel grocer. Guarantee you the company doesn’t care and is not even slightly inconvenienced by your laziness, no matter how you try to rationalize it.

Theres plastic tokens you can use in those. In Poland, in nearby leroy merlin (it’s a french(?) home improvement store) they even give them out to customers.

We have these coin lock trollies here.
I made a tool that bypasses the coin lock so I know that every time I return my trolley I am motivated purely by social concern and not self interest.
I am 100% serious, I wish I knew what was wrong with me.
They hand out free plastic tokens for the trollies at the registers here in Lidl’s in Denmark, and people still put their trolly back.

We even have those little plastic coins in Aus! Just had to ask at the help desk at the supermarket and they’d give you one with its own little keyring adaptor too! Really useful when you needed it!

It assumes a purely capitalist worldview where the only way you can personally gain from an action is via monetary reward. I know I’m preaching to the choir here on Lemmy, but being in the US I think it’s still worth pointing out because it’s a full-on cultural disease.

If there’s a cart corral on the same aisle within visual distance, then yes. Otherwise I just find another loose cart and push mine there.
I’ve asked people before and what I get most often is “🤷 it’s their job, let them do it, I’m not going to work for free”. If I can return mine in active labor, you can return yours you lazy fuck.

There are people who I dislike far more than those who don’t return the shopping cart. The people who walk past 10 carts to get into the store and grab a cart are the worst.
I respectfully disagree, once as I was leaving Walmart I saw a women walking with her shopping cart, grab the bags out as it was rolling and just walked away, leaving the cart flying through the parking lot towards someone’s car, I literally ran after it and grabbed it. I was a kid when this happened, and I almost tore that lady’s head off, even as a kid I knew that was wrong and was appalled by this adult woman’s blatant selfishness and carelessness.
In my opinion this is the worst, although it’s a rare creature to be this terrible.
There will always be assholes that the collective must contend with. We should not divert the entire conversation to the assholes. There would be far fewer carts in the parking lot and less work for everyone if folks would just grab a cart or two and take them in with them as they go.
