I’m considering installing smart locks on my house’s exterior doors. I’m currently looking at the Lockin Veno Solar Face or the Lockly Visage Zeno.
My lifestyle is to always have the doors locked, and we unlock them when we go in or out, and then we re-lock the door behind us.
It seems that smart locks only “smart unlock” the door from the outside, and from the inside you must manually unlock it. I find that annoying and of such an insignificant increase in convenience over my current manual locks that is not worth it.
I suspect that locks that support ultra wide bandwidth (sense the presence of your phone/watch) would unlock from the inside a well as the outside, but I don’t want UWB.
Does anyone have experience with smart locks? Do any of them automate unlocking from inside as well as outside?
I have no experience with smart locks but I work in IT and would never want anything smart for something essential I need to to rely on. Especially not if it’s provided by a for profit company.
I’d like open source hardware and software smart locks, but I’m not technical enough to make one or even install/configure/maintain one if I could find one.
I won’t get one that requires cloud connectivity, but I think I have to get one that’s made/sold by a for profit company.
Do not buy smart locks that depend from a cloud service. Any other consideration is secondary.
What do you do when they will force a monthly subscription to unlock your doors? That’s pure P.K.Dick distopyan future.
Of r what do you do when the company decide to drop support for your otherwise perfectly working locks?

I have a Nuki Smart Lock Pro 5 and am really happy with it. What was important to me: it’s made in Europe (Austria) and doesn’t send your info to China or USA. There is no fee for some shady online service. In fact, it doesn’t require online connectivity, but if you opt to connect it to Wi-Fi (for free), you can use some of its „smarter“ features. It does have a function to re-lock the door as soon as it closes, this does require the additional purchase of some sensor which I don‘t have. I did however choose to purchase the optional fingerprint reader so the kids can enter and leave easily. There are a lot of great additional features. I really love that thing.

If you unlock from the inside with a thumb turn, it isn’t inconvenient.
To me, it is a little inconvenient, and is something I’m looking to replace by technology since technology can do the same task from the outside.
Can you explain the inconvenience?
For me, if i have to use my hand anyway to turn the doorknob, it doesn’t seem inconvenient to me to first turn a little thumb turn.
But maybe you have a different way of thinking about it?
I enjoy technology and automation. If I can make it slightly easier to do something, I might want to do it. It’s not too far fetched to also imagine adding a door unlatcher and door opener/closer in my future, which would remove the need to use my hands at all.
That part would be useful, like how with a mini van you can trigger the sliding door with your foot from the outside.
I guess i don’t see the return on investment or fun in replacing a standard front door with an electrically actuated one for myself, but if that is your hobby, more power to you!
If I understand you correctly you want the door to unlock when you’re at home and approach the door?
That doesn’t strike me as a good thing.
Yeah, that’s what I’m looking for, regardless whether it would be a good thing in your environment.
