            Yupp…

Act 1 US war of independence founded modern Canada because a) the quebecois ever fearful of cultural erasure, ever relevant today given those US demands, b) those not in favour of a racist dictatorship (yes the anglosphere was turning their backs on a monster they helped create), my family moved to loyalist country, fitting, and c) Britain’s desire to legitimize presence by recognizing first nations,… founded canada. The US invaded thinking we would join but Quebec and the indigenous wanted nothing to do with that genocidal regime. An asymetrical response ended American interests.

Act 2 The war of 1812, the US claims they kinda won because they genocided the Iroquois nation and paved a way for continental-scale genocide … but another goal was conquest of Canada. A goal they failed on every county…britain, its loyalists, and later founders of Canada fought back and said fuck you. Canada 100% repelled the US invasion using asymmetrical warfare.

Act 3 Fuck around and find out.

        • I don’t think you can say that if you’ve never been invaded/occupied by a superior army.

Maybe come over to vietnam and go to some museums or talk to some people if you want to know what asym warfare is like.

          • Yes, Canadians have no idea what it’s like. We’ve seen even less ugliness than Americans, and when this whole thing started, we had to go to hockey for martial metaphors.

Living in a warzone is a learning curve you can go up fast, though, because you have no choice.

            • I know someone who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and did a tour diffusing IEDs in Afghanistan. I’m pretty sure he knows how to build one if it came to that.

Americans don’t recognize that Canadians actually did go to Afghanistan. It’s not just Hockey metaphors, people in Canada actually do know the tactics the US military has a difficult time dealing with. That’s because our soldiers had to deal with those same tactics when fighting alongside Americans for two fucking decades. If the US decides to betray Canada they will soon be reminded that Canadians were in Afghanistan and what was learned there.

Yeah, combat vets, relief workers and refugees are not included. Even just being from a family with those backgrounds teaches you a bit about how the world really works, when push comes to shove, speaking from experience.

The average Canadian on the street lacks the experience to understand, though. Even more than that, there’s been a kind of resistance to understanding it, because it’s easier and cleaner not to.

If OP thinks guerilla warfare is a vacation, they probably don’t know what they don’t know.

Plenty of Americans are hoping a dumb ass move like that is enough to weaken the morons in charge and join your side.

Like both coasts and most of the bordering states would have majorities on Canada’s side.

The title seems to be generating confusion, but the author’s point is that there are billionaire oligarchs (not just Trump, people whose power is not term-limited) pushing to gain control of Canada’s resources. He’s not talking about ordinary Americans nor is he necessarily talking about an invasion or a war.

The playbook here is generally to apply economic pressure with the aim of causing political discontent, while at the same time financing an opposition faction that’s more pliable, like they’re doing against Cuba, Afghanistan, Iran, etc.

I could see it happening in bite sized pieces. Just like Ukraine really. Annex a small area, wait till the protests die down then repeat. I’m sure Vladimir would be cheering that on. After all great nuclear powers do whatever they want, don’t they.

They’ll be aiming to crush Canada economically until Albertans are sure they want to go it alone. Then they can start physically dismantling the country, starting with Alberta, and intensifying the economic pressure on the rest until Canada submits to de facto US rule. They can formalize it later with humilitating treaties and guns.

Canada needs to work quickly on economic and military independence. Our whole international position needs to change before the USA really gets going with the program. And Canada needs to figure out how to make it very painful for the USA if it attempts anything. If ever the USA invades, we need to already be there inside their country, physically and virtually, making life hard for them in surprising ways. And we need to build up alliances until they’re so strong that it becomes uncomfortable for our allies to flake out and go along with the USA.

Yeah but like the Ukranians Canada will keep up the fight,Canada is not going to be pushed around and the US has this habit of having the white house being burnt down when they try and invade us, Trump has already laid the groundwork for it to start.

        • The requirements on those haven’t changed since the 90s. You want people to be ready for a possible guerilla war and basically still ban 15000 models of firearms by name without any reason other than ‘AR-15 bad’ and ‘this rifle looks military even though it is a plinker jam-o-matic in a civilian caliber’. They sent many to Ukraine and they threw the latter in the garbage because of useless they are. They even banned hunting rounds for arbitrary reasons, like single shot rifles from the 1880s and the Weatherby .460 magnum, a big game hunting round, because they banned anything with a muzzle energy of more than 20K joules… Calling it an anti material rifle, which it is woefully unsuited for. Even banning the .50 BMG, which has never been used in a crime in Canada, was done entirely on some ‘we have moved beyond this as a society’ or ‘weapons of war Canadians don’t need’ even though at this point the world has been regressing back to violent authoritianism at breakneck speeds AND they have done jackshit to counter any rightwing misinformation. Incels are getting worse and worse and they are still pushing for gun laws entirely due to the 1989 shooting done by a proto-incel.

If anything I firmly believe they will discourage the average Canuck from resisting and those that and survive this war will probably have to deal with all manner of issues from the government going forward.

400 million people is 400 million distinct people. Nobody could or does represent them; the idea that someone can represent “the will of the people” is propaganda. Same with every other government; they actually just have control.

A leader that is elected by their country, represents it.

Well, that’s basically the propaganda. Says who? God? Physics? Neither. And, elect how? Some countries have proportional representation, which neither the US or Canada do.

At the end of the day, a state is anything that has a monopoly on the use of force. Some allocate political power within themselves through elections (of many massively different kinds), while some do it other ways.

You could say, “okay, elections have nothing to do with it, but we’re still responsible for what we let our governments do”, which covers the “it’s a collective responsibility” bit. And there’s a strong argument for that. But, by that measure pretty much everyone sucks everywhere, which you can take however you want.

                • Says who

Well in that country, Republicans voters definitely because they turn out to vote religiously. We know they’re represented.

I guess this presidents apathy and selfishness represents those who don’t vote for whatever reason, so he represents them as well.

For those that did and are looking for excuses, this president gives a lot of those too, so I guess he represents them?

                  That’d cover it wouldn’t it?

You could say, elections have nothing to do with it

Well if I go by the evidence demonstrated repeatedly by the Republican vote, which is evidence demonstrated by Americans, I have to disagree.

                  pretty much everyone sucks everywhere

Well, no, but we are responsible for our governments. As an Aussie I’m ashamed of my weak government and I will act however I can next election, but I note that the voting strategy, which was to vote in progressive senators that block bad policy and pass good I and many others took has been reasonably effective here.

  • blah blah blahyadda yadda yadda hype hype hype.

They might be serious about WANTING to annex Canada, the same way the Quebec separatists WANTED to separate from Canada, but serious about actually DOING it? When push comes to shove, they never actually get around to DOING it. They always want someone ELSE to do it.

When it comes right down to it, what they REALLY want, is attention.

Also this war would be different. A bunch of English speaking Canadians (and English speaking supporters) bad mouthing the us on the news. Would look awful bad for them. They are only used to non English bad mouthing them during a war which is easier to suppress in the news.

The Americans are very much not serious about annexing Canada in fact.

Best to be prepared anyway obviously, but no, the president is just talking shit, for leverage in other ways.

The only way it would work is if a sizable percent of canada wanted to join, and even then, it’s doubtful, although finding an enclave that does support joining the US and then making a provocation to justify it is possible, as Russia did in South Ossentia in Georgia, that part of Moldova, and the Crimea. Or as hitler did in the sudentland in Czechoslovakia.

But that is doubtful, not the least as he’s record unpopular, on the back foot with Iran and inflation, and looks like on old washed up bitch.

As a general rule, when the leaders of a notoriously aggressive superpower next door spend years talking about annexing your country, it’s best to err on the side of caution and take it seriously.

    • He’s still got an approval rate above 30%. A third of Americans don’t vote, so while someone else might get into power sometimes, we need to plan on the US being a sometimes fascist country for the foreseeable future.

And there’s a ratchet effect going on. The crazies do crazy things and the moderates roll back some of it but not all of it. So when the crazies get back in, it ratchets further from the previous time the crazies were in.

Traditionally since the 1980s at least, it’s been in the 50s of the voting age population. It has inched up the last 20 years, only breaking 60% of the voting age population in 2020. 2024 was 59 to 64 percent according to the old measure not adjusting for felons and illegal immigrants and such, and 64 under the new measure. (Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_turnout_in_United_States_presidential_elections) end edit.

2020 was 62 and 65% under those metrics.

It’s not even about straight vote totals now though, which is why it was such a big deal when Biden did fuckall then anointed someone (else) that couldn’t’ win, it’s about overcoming efforts to rig the system at every level.

I suspect they’ve been cheating in myriad ways since at least 2020, and that we can draw a straight line from their open efforts to rig voting in a betrayal of the US in 2020 and beyond, to their theft of the 2000 election.

  • I’m not sure the US, with all their “military might” are actually ready to face a war against a border enemy that’s not an underdeveloped country and that is expert on their own terrain and also very dispersed. You can’t just throw a bomb in Canada and kill thousands because I’m not sure you’ll find a thousand people living close to each other in the first place.

Meanwhile, if Canada wanted to reply in kind, they’d just need to send a swarm of drones to any close city like New York and cause a massacre. However, I’m pretty sure it won’t be needed because if pedohitler decides to invade Canada, they’d make half of the US side with Canada.

I don’t want a new war to burst, but hell if I’d not like it to happen and see Magastan get its ass whooped.
