Online games sites, AI chatbots and companions as well as social media platforms will soon have to carry out age verification when a user opens a new account, according to documents obtained by Euractiv.

“The Commission’s widely expected proposal” is not the same as “Will soon have to”.
Not everything the commission proposes gets passed.

That doesn’t prove more than the age of the account, though - if I share the account details with anyone, there’s more than one user and at least one is of unknown age. And assuming the og owner isn’t e.g. dead (or made several accounts), it’d make no difference to verifying my age now to prove I’m an adult…

But the unknown user can only log in with his age verification. You won’t verify your age once but every time. Otherwise it could be circumvented like you describe.

That’s why it is dangerous because it can be easily abused for tracking.

My old gmail account was 21 years old but google still took down my restaurant reviews if the owners complained - due to me allegedly being a recently created bot account. So I don’t think they take that into account at all.

The result this is going to have is that only companies that have the resources to design complex age verification and categorization systems with varying degrees of parent oversight can offer online services.

Just a great way to make sure small companies can’t compete with market incumbents. Sounds like we doing regulation American style now.
