the push back the director was getting and his constant defending of his “vision” of Resident Evil makes sense now after seeing it. It’s a movie made about like a tiny piece of lore you’d find in the game. like one of those journal entries or notes you’d come across where some random NPC or scientist would tell you what’s happening to them and around them. That’s what this movie is. I was going to call it “Resident Evil 2.5” but it’s not even that. If you were to play it as a game you’d be disappointed.
The movie is essentially “here’s the perspective of a NPC you’d come across while Playing Resident Evil 2 who eventually turns into a T-Virus monster”. Also the ending is weird. Depending on your familiarity with the games you’d literally look at the ending from two different perspectives. If you haven’t played the games or are not familiar with the lore you’d look at the Umbrella Corporation scientists and think “oh these guys are nice, they’re trying to help” OR if you’ve played the games and know the lore you’d think “oh these guys are evil and they’re trying to experiment on him” But then the movie doesn’t help point the unfamiliar audience members in the right direction.
You’re literally watching someone else play a very minor side quest.
Context: I know very little about Resident Evil the game, I watched this movie bc I was with my cousin who plays it. I’m not a huge fan of horror movies tho I like them as B Movies.
I thought the movie was all right. The horror elements focused on body horror, jump-scares, and apocalyptic imagery. Nothing wrong with that, tho my fave horror films (like: Nope, Videodrome, and Sinners) usually have a little something more. It had kinda the feel of a game i.e. various stages and certain sound effects, which was kinda entertaining. It was like a really well-rendered playthrough, which I was OK with. I thought the ending was pretty good: I got that it was a “this is how my night started vs this is how it’s ending” kinda vibe. Anyway it was not a classic but it was also not a B-movie.
