If you’re writing smut in html and css, you can make it into an EPUB quite easily! An EPUB is just a zip archive containing xhtml files and a couple of metadata files.
Does it have support for Javascript files? I did try to look into it before, but I had trouble finding what I could use to create an EPUB from my HTML file, and when I did it only took the HTML and CSS, not JS
I don’t think any epub readers support JS unfortunately.
Calibre has an ebook editor included in its installation that you can stick your HTML into. However, technically, epubs use XHTML with some XML-based extensions, so there’s some epub-specific learning involved.
Also, there are lots of other document technologies out there that you can use to produce books, EPUBs, PDFs, etc, if you’re interested. I’m a bit of a nerd about doc prep and typography so I’ve been down a few rabbit holes. Here’s a random selection of stuff I’ve played with:
- Asciidoctor is a markup format similar to Markdown but is a little more feature-rich. Makes nice ebooks as well as PDFs or HTML pages from the same markup file. I attempted writing a tech book once and this is what I used.
- mdBook is mostly used for HTML documentation sites but there’s an experimental epub plugin.
- Typst is more complicated but gives you lots of control over how the page is put together, and is mainly focused on producing print documents and PDFs. It supports a lot of features used in books.
- LaTeX was invented decades ago because an influential computer scientist and author was writing a book and hated how typesetters laid it out, so he invented his own typesetting language, as ya do. It’s quite old but still used quite a bit, but Typst is a more modern alternative.
In a completely different direction, if you want to use HTML and CSS and JavaScript to build interactive non-linear stories, like visual novels, there’s Twine. You can even host Twine games on itch.io for free (and they’re okay with NSFW content).
Eh, I think I’ll stick to what I’m doing. An HTML file with everything embedded has the advantage of being easily shareable and pretty much anyone can read it as long as they have a browser
Totally understandable. I’m just throwing out a lot of options for you since I’ve had fun with them myself. I like making books hehe.

The epub spec? Yeah, should be allowed. But most readers probably do not support Javascript.

I put NSFW because of the word smut, and also that it could lead to more NSFW conversation in the comments, like someone mentioned some porn games. I think adding the NSFW tag just in case is not a bad thing
Personally I use markdown for all of it (I tried hammer for this, really like the encyclopedia aspect but it felt too limiting, no tables or diagrams which I like to use).
I don’t even like doing my work stuff in Word.
How does it compare to writing smut in plain text on paper?
I can write a script to automatically create a table of content that is clickable, customize the style of the text to give each characters speech a different style or color, also, there is growth of some body part in the smut I’m writing and I’m currently writing a script that displays on a sidebar of the story the current size of the body part :3
You’re only a few steps removed from my favourite kinda smut game. Choose your own adventure text based smut a la CoC, TiTS and most importantly Lilith’s Throne.
Oh I love those games!! But it’s already hard enough to write a single story, so a story with choices and game mechanics integrated would be pretty hard for me. I’m a programmer mainly, not a writer, but I felt like there was not enough smut of the kind I liked online, so I’m currently writing one that has all my main kinks hehe

What advantages would it have over using an HTML file with CSS and JS in it? One of the advantages of those is that I can pretty much do what I want, as long as I have the knowledge of how to code it
Essentially it lets you write “passages” as individual files in one of their “story formats” and link them together into a story. The story formats support variables and templating and that sort of thing. You’d probably be most interested in the Snowman format, which simplifies the basic stuff but still lets you hook in your own JS.
If you’re happy with making everything from scratch, I can totally respect that! I’m just sharing stuff I’ve had fun with.

I already wrote in another comment, but it’s to do dynamic things, like a table of contents generated automatically from the headings that are clickable to go to the chapter, it also highlights the current chapter. And since I’m creating a growth story, I have a sidebar that keeps track of the size/description of different body parts in the story
For the writers out there, NovelWriter is a fantastic FLOSS alternative to Scrivener (has similar organizing features), and it entirely uses markdown.
