This is 100% true.
Official French language test demands you call it “le fin du semaine”. Meanwhile every single Quebecer and New Brunswicker calls it “le weekend”.
In Quebec it depends. In Montreal people say weekend, but in Quebec city they say “la fin de semaine”. I pretty much think it’s fin de semaine in most regions too. It’s just that the Montreal metropolitan area is half the population.
I personally heard a lot of french people say weekend too, not fin de semaine.
“Air Conditioner”, meanwhile, is the kind of name americans in the 50s give products to make them sound slightly futuristic and the next in a long line of purchases necessary for the Middle Class™ life. Twenty years on and its an abbreviation.
An abbreviation that sometimes needs clarification since Americans also became too lazy to say “Alternating Current.”
Hypothetical conversation:
“Something something AC.”
“Hmm, do you mean alternating current? Or air conditioning?”
Meanwhile in Quebec the language police has decided that “climat” is too close to “climate” and must be banned, and anyone who disagrees gets the death penalty. This caused an outrage in parliament so now the official policy is only every second disagreement gets the death penalty.
Australians would call it the climo. Actually, how do they not do this already?
Because it’s called aircon
It’s the airco, old mate.
Airco airco airco
The English would end up using rhyming slang for it. They’d call it “the stop” as in “stop and stare [rhymes with air]” or some other insufferable thieves’ cant.
Stick the air con on
The aircon con.
Okay but no joke people call it “La clime” in French. This meme is too real!
Some Germans shorten “Die Klimaanlage” to “Die Klima” which is pretty close to “Das Klima”, meaning climate.
Personally I prefer “Der Klimat” (with the t at the end) just to fuck with people, because everyone understands it but nobody likes it XD
Enters the car, turns on the climate
🌍: 🥵

Bob l’éponge
*au
People who say “aircon” nonchalantly whistling as they try to walk away unnoticed
theyd call it le calisse de freezé imarche pu tabarnac ostie
Four twenty ten.
Have a nice day.
French is such a stupid language I cant tell if that is real french or not.
I took a year of French in high school and recognize most of those words, so I can firmly say maybe.
It kinda looks like a French version of Beamtendeutsch (lit. civil servant’s German).
It’s real French but it is just as silly in French as if in English we would say “machine for controlling the cooling of air in the interior of the building”, and nobody would use it. The joke about the language police is apt for the general behaviour of the Academie but not actually real in this case. French is probably less stupid than English tbh, although the rules about pronunciation vs spelling are over the top, at least they’re still way more systematic.
The Academie is out of touch with contemporary french language. They got laughted at when they released their latest dictionary which stated FRANC was the official currently, despite the EURO replacing it 20+ years ago.
Commercial dictionaries like Robert or Larousse are more useful or up-to-date. The Academie dictionnary seems mostly useless sadly.
English is like 40% bastardized French so the stupidity of each must be in lockstep to some degree
Yes, but the very fact that it’s 40% French and 60% other random stuff is what makes it stupider.
I did 5 years of it and they call it la clim for short (pronounced cleem). Climot sounds very real to me as well, but I don’t think it is.
Oh the French are so silly
still doing this “shit foreign people say” routine?

It is ok if it’s the Italians or the French imo. Otherwise I disapprove
