I went to see Sammy Rae & the Friends (great jazz pop band from Brooklyn), and nearly everybody was dressed in 1970s costumes! I understand at a metal show people wear black, but this was next level, very maximalist and intricate costumes. Are concerts all costume parties now, or this unique?

The only concerts I’ve been to in the last 10 years were 2 MCR shows, and I’m not sure there’s any difference between what people were wearing there and what they’d always wear. Goth girls be goth’in.

I love Sammy Rae and the friends. When I went to their show a few years ago there weren’t people “in costume”. I do know that must shows have a dress vibe that you can join or not. Lucius has a subset that dress in all sparkles. I think Sammy Rae still has a 70s vibe for the band so I assume people want to join in.

Where do you draw the line between a “dress code” (expected attire, as your metal show example) and costumes?

When I go to a metal show, there are countless people dressed well beyond anything they would wear anywhere else. Chains, chokers, spikes, goth makeup, and so on. Would this be a costume?

yeah i’d consider it a costume because i see people wear metal, goth, punk stuff on a regular night in LA, but while some 70s fashions are back in, ive never seen a costume event like this outside of halloween or a convention

In their defense, plain 70s attire isn’t really a common style of fashion anymore* where rocker/metalhead is pretty common (even if people go all out at shows).

Sounds like this artist has encouraged 70s vintage fashion or advertised a 70s show specifically. Still doesn’t make every show a costume party for hecks sake 😂, what a silly idea

      * In no way means to imply there’s no one out there doing it

  • That sounds awesome. I continue to attend the same emo shows I did in 2007 and the dress style hasn’t changed significantly, but I doubt my experience is representative of the norms across other genres! I passed a line of people waiting to enter a local stage production recently and everyone was dressed in 20s gear. Looked like a fun excuse to dress up.
