Your friend and mine, Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, is going even harder into the AI slop. He tweeted: [Twitter, archive] We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool…

‘No more hand-written code’

I do play quite a few games (and own a lot more), but the closest I got to the epic launcher is this popup after I got the free games out of FOMO.

And no, it isn’t installed. So any slop improvements on speed don’t matter to me at all. Odd how Steam doesn’t have to beg me to ask if the launcher is installed (nor does it need some weird popup to check how many people have installed it).

    Image description.

A popup asking if the launcher is installed. With buttons to click if it is installed, and help you download it if it isn’t.

Why buy stuff in the browser when the launcher is already open and running?

@Soyweiser because Firefox is about 2000% faster than the embedded chromium, and because links open in the browser, so why switch

What’s p-hacking but for metrics you technically win at?

Nobody was like “epic is bad because open slow”. Maybe hire some fucking UX and UI designers, build basic shop features that are missing. Support linux.

I think valve are evil rent seeking bastards but stuff like not taking money for ads, steam input, proton, streaming, multiplayer joining, family library, and reviews does add actual value.

Of course, adding and maintaining features while vibe coding would be a neat trick, so how fast a pile of shit opens it is!

Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look.

    Just pure fellow vibecoders cringe.

@Architeuthis @dgerard well, they couldn’t have vibed one that retains the old look. That’s not what you get from the slopbot

Why did they phrase it like that? “Programming is too hard for us, because we’re incompetent and lazy. So, instead of doing that, we’re vibe coding.” Even when they’re trying to brag, they know that deep down, vibe coding is about half-assing and cutting corners, not improving efficiency or quality.

    If Epic can vibe-code a game, why can’t I vibe-code a game I like better?

    What function do they serve?
