Seems to me the obvious thing here would be to check and see if the money had actually been paid to the government, and if it hadn’t, to a) begin fraud charges and b) get that money back.

In his case, Pearce did not report any income, but erroneously stated he had paid millions in taxes since 2016 and wanted it refunded.

Uhm… fraudulently stated, not ‘erroneously’. WTF! Jeebus, is there any way the rest of us Canadians can sue these selfish grifters or the govt to get our money back? Any fraud like this will come out of our future income as additional taxes.

    • I don’t think the CBC can say “fraudulently” because fraud is a crime and he hasn’t been charged, let alone convicted.

“Allegedly” doesn’t work, because the facts aren’t in dispute.

But I agree, “erroneously” also seems wrong. They probably should have just left the adverb out of it.

I mean he is right. And this isn’t the only time something like this has happened. Also why have they not been charged with fraud. Are there any rules anymore or is everyone afraid to enforce them.
