    well,

    …

    yea…

i guess being angry at ai is easier than admitting to myself i’ve wasted 4 years of my life (and counting) studying for a job that won’t exist by the time i’m out of uni…

and, it feels like recently ai just turned everything i cared about to shit. art, writing, programming, gaming, computers in general really

i should care about more things

No your anger is entirely justified. Just misplaced.

Your directing anger towards an inanimate thing. Ai doesn’t care nor is it harming anything you listed.

Human shit stains using ai as a blunt instrument is harming everything you listed.

Being upset at AI is like being upset at guns for massshootings.

Put a gun in the ground and guess what it’s going to do. Fuck all, it’s going to sit there cause it’s a piece of shit metal that can’t do shit.

Direct your anger to the actual sub human shit stains ruining everything for the rest of us. It gives you an actual outlet, an actual real and tangible thing that you can rationalize.

You can DO something about people misusing a tool. You can’t do shit about the tool.

Pandoras box can never be closed. We call all work together to prevent assholes from using what came out of it from making our lives worse tho.

What about being mad at gun manufacturers and merchants? Instead of fighting the guy with the gun, fight the guy supplying the guns to prevent future incidents. Fight the cause, not just the symptom.

Also, “it’s a tool” is one of the most annoying pieces of pro-AI propaganda I keep seeing. Nobody who uses AI treats it like a tool; they treat it like an employee they can take the credit from. They only ever call it a tool when they want to defend it, as if a shitty tool is somehow absolved of its crimes by being a tool.

To be fair, the gun manufacturer IS the guy slinging it as well. They are in this instance the same person. Anthropic would be the manufacture, distributor and gunman for example.

The reality of the matter “its just a tool” is both literally just factual it IS the reality. It also makes a cheap and easy scape goat. But this is a problem not just ai but damn well near every major tool has had people use to sideline the harm caused by the disingenuous till the law and public understanding catches up. It’s why snake oil salesmen works so well. Your not lying. Your just not telling the whole truth and misleading by virtue of ignorance and bad faith.

So yeah, i entirely agree. Its a fucking annoying ass frustrating piece of pro-ai bullshit from bad-faith actors when used that way. I fucking hate it.

The number of people who are actually treating LLMs as the tool they are and respecting their limitations, their problems and how shitty they can be. While being honest and upfront about them. Is small, far smaller then i wish it was.

But at the same time, those people trying to honest also keep getting doxed, getting hated on, being targeted and having violence directed at them from communities they arn’t use to having to deal with that from. Which is ALSO something damn well near every major tools early adopters had to deal with. And like normal those early adopters turn inward and try to hide and insulate themselves from that misdriected hate.

Resulting in the only people being vocal are the fucktards with no standards or morals abusing the new thing for cheap profit and clout. While anyone with morals feels shame and tries to hide it to not upset others or disrupt them. Its a shitty cycle, its happened repeatedly though history, and theres basically nothing to be done about it so long as there are assholes willing to lie, cheat and fuck over others. AI is REALLY bad for it too cause of how low the bar is to become a snake oiler for it.

My point really just boils down to, hate the assholes and the abusers. Leave the guys trying to use it ethically and honestly alone how ever few of them there are, and don’t blame a tool for a human problem.

The reality of the matter “its just a tool” is both literally just factual it IS the reality.

No it’s not. The only input you have with an AI is telling it to do something, which is less like a hammer and more like an employee. AI is not, in any way, a tool.

I’m not going to insult your intelligence by saying you don’t already know this. I’m not going to insult your morality by saying you do already know this. I’m just going to leave.

Thats a tool… The carrying out of anothers design IS one of the definitions of a tool. Employees ARE tools. Its a horridly demeaning definition yes, but it IS one of the definitions. It’s where the insultive form of the word comes from for heaven sake.

They are literally tools. Even if you go by the more generic definition of just something that is used to perform an operation or action. Its still a tool.

If you want to go by ONLY the very strictest definition and ignore all secondary ones. Then computers as a whole arn’t tools full stop. Only an object that is directly used to multiply the force of a manual labor task is a tool or the cutting edge of said objects are tools.

So either its a tool, or we are being pedantic idiots picking and choosing cause our fee fees are hurt and we want to play stupid word games. There is no inbetween here. So pick your side. Are computers tools? Or are we playing stupid word games.

No, a tool is a thing someone uses to carry out their design by themself. An AI does it for you without any input after the initial instruction. They are not tools any more than an employee is.

You’re either an idiot or a liar. I’ll let you decide which, but as I said before, I am done with you. I’m sure, as someone who assumes and mocks someone else’s feelings, you’ll take this with grace and move on from a lost cause.

I feel the same… 6 years spent on 2 degrees to get into game development, and as soon as I graduate from the last one, the aftermath of COVID and then AI burn the industry and cause it to be nearly impossible to get into for the average junior and layoffs are increasing each year… Then people say we gotta just “deal with it and stop complaining” 🙄

      I’m tired of it all

Uhhhh you could’ve asked anyone even 10 or 15 years ago and they would’ve told you not to study game dev under any circumstances. AI is making it worse, but there was already immense competition for underpaid and overworked jobs.

i feel this so much :<

honestly i might even be fine with it, build my own ai-free bubble, and just keep doing the things i like the manual way, if my job which i am required to work to survive and which i previously enjoyed hadn’t turned to shit because of ai and is threatened to stop existing entirely threatening my lifelyhood

I usually only see this obsession with… u know… peeps within the bubble.

but yea I get that its kinda a coping mechanism. it hit em similarly, maybe not as strongly and things do suck big time rn. Anyway I looked at wonderful paintings in a museum today. awesome stuff, really expressive and just - strong.

I have yet to see this “bubble” of anti-AI sentiment. Its impossible to be completely locked in a anti-AI feedback loop when the entire world around you is pushing it constantly.
Yes, people can get stuck surrounded by ideas and misconceptions in a way that creates a harmful feedback loop, for sure. Not once, however, have I heard an argument against the growing anti-AI movement that wasn’t just meekly defending the slop machine with objectively invalid points.

None of us are immune to propaganda and misinformation, but most times I’ve seen activists (or progressives in general) be told to “get out of their bubble” or “see the other side”, it’s nothing more than a convenient way to wrongly paint those arguments as short-sighted or ill-informed.

There is so much to hate about AI, but programming has not been about typing out code letter by letter for a long time, probably before you and I even started doing it. IDEs have had autocompletion and “generating” whole classes / methods / whatever structure for a couple of years now (although deterministically). Low code / no code has been growing in popularity before LLMs. Generative AI is out of pandoras box, there is no way it will vanish out of software development one day. But we’re also not yet at a point where any sales asshole is able or even willing to create effective and resilient systems as we have seen a couple of times in the recent past. Maybe we will never get there.

Concepts and architecture matter more than code, they always have. Focus on the bigger picture and learn to use LLMs as a tool, in ways and situations / workflows where it unarguably works (even if you doubt it), but refuse to become a meat proxy that became unable to answer a slack message without AI. Tech is not the problem, it’s a handful of people ruining it for everyone while getting stupid crazy rich by fucking up our planet and the people living on it. Don’t let it take away your passion for computers, or else they have won.

Oof again super grateful I chose healthcare. They’re still trying to shove ai in but at least for now they know Claude can’t wrangle a wildly verbally aggressive schizophrenic who’s also had a stroke and is perpetually covered in piss out of the dayroom and into the shower for the fifth time today.

    • AI is a new excuse to not hire junior developers. The financial crisis was another excuse. The dot com bubble was another excuse. Junior developers are needed, but hiring authorities hate to employ them.
