“Loneliness is often seen as an issue affecting older people, but we found its association with poorer health-related quality of life was greatest among young adults ages 15–24,” Rizal said.

"Loneliness is subjective and reflects how satisfied we feel with our social relationships, whereas social isolation is about objectively having fewer relationships and less frequent social contact.

"You can be surrounded by people and still feel deeply lonely, just as someone with relatively few social connections may not necessarily feel lonely.

Wait this means it was definitely a good idea to ban youth from social media right? This will make them feel less isolated from the communities they are stuck growing up in right? Right?..

…or maybe doing that was obviously attempted mass manslaughter from the beginning and people should be held accountable for that?

Lets not be extremist and emotional about this though, we will have plenty of time to do with those emotions later when we are yet again trapped in a social environment we have to entirely mask in!

The manslaughter bit is hyperbolic i agree, but if your disabled or just lonely/isolated THEYRE great. Like possibly life saving great. Ive WAS going to meet up with some peeps on reddit, which WAS going to be nice lmao.

But thats if the social media is used productively of course (and i would not include twitter and tiktok at all being positive in that social sense). I certaintly have not used it much that way and was addicted, and fucked me up a bit.

Another thing that comes to mind, is my gens reliance on things discord too much, may be a bit self perpuating (as in you could have made an irl group instead and advertised). But at the same time people can get a lot out of it if they no body

Not really addressing your point at all im just rambling lol

    • Oh yeah, I am deeply hopeful about the potential of social media but I hate discord with a passion that could fuel me to roll boulders up hills for eternity, that place is a buzzsaw for digital communities, it has destroyed so much vibrance on the open web it hurts even thinking about it.

Discord also shapes conversations heavy handedly in a way that I honestly find disturbing especially because everything is so opaque and subject to frequently being changed on a whim.

I would do it gladly, like I would literally do a livestream of myself repeatedly pushing an annoying boulder up a hill slowly and laboriously and when I finally get to the top turn to the camera, flick it off (that part is meant for discord) and then roll the boulder down the hill over and over again if it raised enough money to destroy discord, that is how pure my feelings are.

note I am not very strong either so this wouldn’t be physically impressive.

I don’t have experience with telegram or whatsapp groups but it isn’t like they are eating the open web in that different of a way…so discord isn’t entirely unique in inspiring me.

edit2 Also reddit now has basically become as bad as discord, so I am throwing that in the furnace too of course

I’m disabled and rarely go out on my own. Social connection via online resources (including chat with people I know IRL, co-op gaming, and forums just like this) is invaluable.
