Some years ago, I was trick-or-treating with my son, and one of the houses had a guy out front with a box of full-sized candy bars, almost full. He just held out the box and said “Help yourself”, and my son asked if he could take 2. The guy just said “You can take the whole box if you want - my wife said I have to stay out here until they’re all gone, and I’d rather be watching the game.”

Until the most recent enshitification of capitalism as a whole, we used to buy 12-14 boxes of vending machine size Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies (2.5oz per). At a 42 count per box, that translated to just shy of 600 bags the last couple years.

We always ran out. Usually no later than 8:30, with kids still showing up afterwards.

Now that the price has increased by about 80%, were getting much cheaper but still full size Rice Krispie treats. Went overboard and got nearly 800 just in case.

just remember that if you live in an area with a decent amount of muslims then don’t give out haribo and other wine gums, because they contain animal gelatine and thus aren’t halal.

I avoid gummies entirely because they’re usually not individually labeled. If the recipient eats halal/kosher/vegetarian, then they’ll throw out ambiguous candy.

No? Your religious restrictions aren’t my problem. This one isn’t allowed to eat pig so we stop giving out candy with gelatine, next one isn’t allowed to take candy from a women so we have the men hold the plate, next one isn’t allowed to see a women who isn’t family so we banish our women to the kitchen. Just because the one does look more reasonable to you then the others doesn’t mean the one isn’t already ridiculous.

Bad math. 94 was 32 years ago.

Edit: the bad math was coming from inside the house.

No, the post says “around 35” which can’t be true yet for someone born in 94.

Worse than that. I’m 54, but I swear “around 30 years ago” was somewhere around the early 80’s when I was growing up. Math may argue, but my heart says it’s true no matter how much my knees deny.

When I was a kid in the 60s, there an old lady who handed out giant homemade popcorn balls at Halloween. The next day at school, everyone would be talking about it.

My parents were always twitchy about Halloween anyway, so they wouldn’t let my brother and I got to her house because it was homemade, and it might be poisonous. I tried to explain that if that were true, every kid in every class I’d had in elementary school would be dead by now, because they all got popcorn balls every year.

I’ll bet they were good. I wouldn’t know.

Every neighbourhood that had people with “fuck you” money had the occasional house like that.

In mine, one of the first mansions that had been built when the couple was young was still handing out full-sized 300g Lindt bars when I was young and the husband had already died of old age. The wife is now long dead as well, the kids sold the property to a developer soon after, but even 40 years later the long-term residents still remember.

Our house never gets visitors, but our driveway is at like a 45° angle and it’s hard to see the porch from the street.

It’s nice because our house basically can’t flood, but I feel really bad for the delivery people.

If you live in a place that’s hard to walk also look for local trunk or treats.

I live in rural Ohio, houses are far apart and a major highway runs through it.

Bummed last year because we didn’t get any trick or treaters. Our local library is doing a trunk or treat though so excited for that
