Honestly, i want a “device” with wifi. And radio to wifi, so i can connect to my home within a 5-10k radius.

I haven’t used my sim in a looooong time, otger than to provide internet, and why the heck do they have to be such a privacy nightmare?

        Im wishing to santa, lol.

But technicaly yes. If i setup a lora mesh setup on my balcony, that connects to my pc. And another lora mesh to wifi interface via esp32, theoretically i should have low enough bandwidth.

Last i checked, a solar panel based lora device would cost 100 eur, i think i can use reticulum that allows working across multiple interfaces. That would be server lora, and then i would get a client lora device would cost like 40.

A typical thin client would also be within 100 ish eur range. This will allow me to have a link to my home mini pc that is hosting a bunch of stuff, maybe i can run matrix bridge so i can access signal and whatsapp. And some basic maps with actual maps cached on thin client and only the public transport api communicating. Then the only other thing i would need would be a way to listen music which probably needs to be implemented somehow.

The only problem is that, i have no clue how much the bandwidths going to be, and how high would i need to put the device etc. And right now, its not a financially wise decision to spend 2-3 hundred eur and hours and hours of debugging and implementing stuff

Obviously. Although a unicorn would be fine as well. Still more realistic than a perfect Linux phone.

If I recall, that one still required some closed source binary blobs to work. Other than that, the UX is probably as good as it’s going to get. The other half of the problem is the world that decided to get addicted to Android and iOS. Anything that isn’t either of the two is going to have a hard time in a world like this.

yeah i know, but for me basically everything just about works. Banking apps included. They just install as normal thanks to Android App Support and work just fine. I dont even need microG for anything 🥳 About the closed source bits -> this is true. Parts of lipstick are not opensource, but i think its fine in that case. they are opensourcing the whole stack bit by bit though. Jolla isnt a big corpo either with 50ppl and I think there are more important things with the OS that need attention.

Still uses halium on an Android kernel, that’s probably the mentioned hardware abstractions.

I really hope this whole “closer ties with the EU” business gets us access to Linux phones. I had the same issue with fairphone if memory serves.

You know what’s really unrealistic in this late-stage capitalistic hellhole? An open-source, Linux-based modern car.

For infotainment it could be doable if a new competitor wanted to appeal to the FOSS nerd community, a massive market that buys billions of cars every year. A car has a hundred other modules that have tiny af chips and Linux would be way too heavy for them.

Also now I’m imagining GPL infotainment. Make changes and you have to share the source with anyone who gets in your car and touches a screen lol

Doesn’t that use Halium to run Linux on the Android kernel? Pretty sure that’s what they meant with hardware abstraction. In fact it’s what most Linux on mobile distros use, with the exception of the Librem 5 and Pinephone. Nura is the only distro I know of which primarily runs on the mainline Linux kernel.

I had several linux phones back in the early 2000s: A couple Motorolas and then at least 3 Nokias, but then we had the Elopcalypse that ended the Nokia line.
