Hello! I don’t get involved in the community much (because shy), but I would consider myself as some kind of wolf.
Entry level furry. If it’s a character I like, I might do the deed to them but I don’t seek it out outside of that
I’m dangerously furry, though I keep on the down-low.
I’m not. I’ve always been curious about how people learn about it, realize they’re a furry, etc.
What’s your story of how you became a furry? What does it mean to you?
Think I joined and made a fursona around 2018 but I’d thought they were pretty neat ages before. I think I took the plunge since the community appeared to be very friendly as was quite LGBT positive and I was looking for somewhere to make some friends. Went to a meet at the city closest to me and then boom, here I be :D
adjacent to the community since 2011; i created my fursona in 2017 because most of the people i am friends with are also furries. that remains the case. this is just kind of an intrinsic part of my personality and if i’m honest it makes talking with more normally oriented people kind of boring 😅
Me kinda? I’m adjacent. I think. I’ve been in and out as a lurker in the fandom for the past decade or so. I still don’t have a sona… mostly because I can’t decide what species.
have furries been thriving on the fediverse all this time?! eg, mastodon. i legitimately feel like I’ve noticed a furry “void” in my usual internet spaces for a few years…

there does seem to be a dearth of them around here and a lot of that probably has to do with the explosion of the mastodon instance snouts.online a few years back and a generally bad experience with mastodon many furries (at least in my circles) had back around 2019-2020
What experiences?
it’s been years now but just the generally, for lack of better term, “wokescold”-y or “shitlib”-y vibe of mastodon did a lot of that. the community felt extremely overbearing at times with content warnings and social norms, in a way that especially didn’t vibe with groups that are repressed and want to talk about those experiences. a lot of it was of course just technically confusing for some people, as was trying to leverage network effects to stick with your friends. some people–artists especially–had specific needs that were hard to meet with migration. and the whole process in general was haphazard and over time as people settled inevitably mastodon politics also got in the way of it, what with defederation being an option and all.
eventually i think it just burned a lot of people out on the platform in a way that has really precluded swathes of the furry community from setting up shop on another federated place, to avoid something like that happening again.
The moral high ground some mastodon users seem to hold over people that have been slower to migrate for any number of completely justifiable reasons has been a definite sticking point in my attempts to switch over to the fediverse as my primary way of keeping up with the internet. Its frustrating but I hope the influx of new users will change the tone a little bit – hopefully not too terribly much, but one that’s a bit more… patient would be nice
Gotcha. I remember the content warnings being a bit odd on there. Perhaps on a future platform or platform iteration, CW’s can be a built-in feature perhaps by tag. Then users could opt or in to those contents, or cover it with warnings before display.
mmmmm that does ring some bells. i hadn’t really delved into it at the time, and i’d heard tales of drama… (which might be the reason for the former!)
