Had a great session on Saturday! My partner is a DM so we play mini oneshots together quite often. This time, we invited 2 friends who’d never ever played, so she cooked up a quick 2 hour game to basically teach them the absolute basics of how to play. It included some cool character building, a scary but secretly nonlethal encounter against a cockatrice (aka demon chicken), and a great resolution with a bit of a cliffhanger ending. Of course they did all the heavy lifting while my nat 1s meant I hurt myself more than the enemy…

I think they actually really enjoyed it, and now we’re talking about setting up a semi regular time in order to turn it into more of a campaign!

That’s wonderful! It’s so good to be able to share something you enjoy, and have others be excited about it too.

I’m curious about your mini one shots though, is that just your partner DMing for you as 1 player? How does that work out?

If we’re less than 3 players, she’ll play as an NPC as well. A lot of the times when it’s just us, we’ll either do a super balls to the walls session 0 character creation, or we’ll basically play test some of her campaign ideas as 2 players. Most of the time it ends up being much less structured, so more wiggle room to poke holes in plans, so it ends up being great practice for both of us.

I ran an intro game of Lancer for some local friends of mine! It was fun, although I should know by now that a one shot is never a one-shot, especially for players who are new to a system.

Also continued my game of Shadowrun I’ve set in Denver. Had some really interesting character moments that arose from one of the players forgetting that they should have told their in-game family they were going to be away overnight (and me forgetting to have their in-game SO call them to check in…). Advanced the plot right up to just before where I’m planning on introducing the main storyline to the players, very excited for the next time we get to play!

  • Continuing my ongoing campaign of Pathfinder 2e Abomination Vaults. My party is level 8 and just entered book 3. I’m excited for them to explore these lower floors, they have a real old school megadungeon vibe with multiple factions to encounter and possibly pit against each other. Plus, the obligatory dragon encounter is down here!

That sounds fun! A lot of campaigns seem to be way too low on dungeons, and dragons (regardless of the system!) Have you been playing together long?

    • I loved playing AV, I started as a Fleshwarp Oread ranger, and took that to I think level 6, then decided I wanted to change to a more melee oriented fighter. Changed out during one of the encounters where my character was basically eaten by a bigger fleshwarp, then had a chestburster scene as it died. The new character was immediately mistrusted by one of the part members, and made for some overall good roleplay moments. I ended up taking that character to the end of the AP, and had a ton of fun with it.

I’m now planning to run AV with some local friends, just need to do a little bit more setup and find a schedule that works for the players.
