If it is from r/196 or c/196@lemmy.ml, it is
Rule: You must post before you leave with proper flair without using slurs, being a bigot, posting porn, or having an NFT avatar. [NFTs are banned.]

Yeah - its just a meme sub coming over from reddit, and for whatever reason its grown quickly here so its showing up in all a lot

My theory is this: new Lemmy users aren’t comfortable yet, so some are looking for easy ways to begin engaging with the site. 196 is a low-stakes way to make a first post without the anxiety of a higher effort post.
I don’t think I mind it either, if it gets more people actively participating in some way. And if it grows too out of control, at least there’s a block option.

That actually makes perfect sense. Making a post can be scary. I’m making a deliberate effort to actually say something, rather than lurking. But deciding what to say is tricky, especially if you don’t know how you’re going to be received. I’m glad something like that can help.

Its grown quickly because the community is made up of primarily/is very accepting of trans people. Im surprised theyre on lemmy.ml amd not beehaw or blahaj.

What?
The communities !196@lemmy.world and !196@lemmy.blahaj.zone have one rule: “If you visit here you must make a post”. It results in a large group of random people making random posts. Mostly some meme image with zero context.
It’s showing up everywhere since lots of people seem to be following the rule, meaning they’re both highly active communities.
